multiplication methods
Lauren Walton, Mathematics Coach
A common question that arises is why children are using different strategies to multiply than we did when we were growing up. What’s wrong with long multiplication or as you may hear it called now - the standard algorithm?
Rob Eastaway and Mike Askew, in their book Old Dogs, New Math: Homework Help for Puzzled Parents, explain that this method that many people believe everyone understood was actually commonly misunderstood. Many people struggled with this technique and even more had very little understanding of why it worked. Today, long multiplication is still taught, but “only after children have been through several other stages first, building their understanding as they go”.
Ultimately, students make the connection between partial products and standard algorithm:

Cornell Road Drop-Off and Pick-Up Reminders
Please use following guidelines if using Cornell Road, behind Dunning, for dropping off or picking up your child.
DO NOT park in the center of the cul-de-sac on Cornell Road. Cars that are parked in the middle of the cul-de-sac do not allow residents of Cornell to enter and exit their driveways safely.
You must park on the odd side of the street against the sidewalk curbing at all times. Please adhere to the NO PARKING posted signs on the even numbered side of the street; before, during, and after school hours.
If you are choosing a “live drop-off” for your student in the morning, please do not pull straight in to the cul-de-sac and then back up to exit the area. This is VERY dangerous. Please proceed in a circular motion around the outside of the cul-de-sac to enter and exit.
DO NOT block any driveways when parking on Cornell or make turns in the center of the road to reverse direction. Use the cul-de-sac to turn around.
Do not double-park.
Thank you for your cooperation with above guidelines so that Cornell Road can continue to be used as an access area for drop and pick up.
appropriate clothing
We care about your children and want them to be happy, comfortable, and safe before and after school, and when playing outside at recess. Please make sure your child is coming to school with appropriate jackets, hats, gloves, scarves, etc. for the cold months ahead. Also, please label everything so that when things turn up in our lost and found, we can return them to your children.

care and share
The Jane Shapiro Care and Share began in 1995 as a Dunning School community service project. Each month a specific food item is collected at the school to help keep A Place to Turn's shelves stocked. What a great sharing and learning project! Donations are gathered up by the students and then with help from staff, they are delivered to A Place to Turn. Learn more about A Place to Turn here.
Thank you for your contributions to A Place to Turn during the year. Our monthly food collection makes a huge difference in our community, while teaching our students the importance of giving.
