ONE-TIME Online COVID-19 Testing Registration Now Available.

There were some bugs with online testing registration this week. We greatly appreciated your patience as we worked with the agency to address the bug.The agency has let the district know that the bug has been resolved for when you were not able to pass selection of your school. Please let your teacher know if you still are having any issues.

The long-awaited, ONE-TIME online C-19 testing registration is now available!

When using the link below to register, you will notice that it will no longer give you the option of choosing a date since your student will be auto-enrolled each week. If you do not wish to have your child tested on a particular week, just Dojo message your teacher and they will not send your child to the testing line.

Hard copy permission forms are still accepted and available from your teacher.

Spirit Friday and Oct-GLOW-Ber!

This week's theme: Our lines are "GLOWING"

Friday's Spirit Theme: Stripe Yourself with Lines! Show your school spirit by wearing stripes/lines! Class with the highest percentage of stripey fabulous spirit participants will gain extra Praise Cards!

In an effort to support our “Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Others, Take Care of Our School” goals, we will be focusing on recognizing “glowing” behaviors in the month of October. Each week, we will have a different behavior focus. We want to shine light on our cheetah scholars who are working hard on these goals. Each teacher will be given a stack of praise cards. If they see a class working hard on the weekly focus, they can give that class a praise card. Teachers hold onto any praise cards their students receive that week. Every Friday, there will be a box in the main office for teachers to deposit their class’ praise cards. During the Monday Cheetah Spotlight video, Mrs. A & Mrs. W. will be drawing 2 praise cards. Those 2 classes will receive a treat that afternoon to celebrate their glowing behaviors. Classroom teachers will set expectations and model each behavior so students will be prepared to show their greatness.

Social Media "Challenges"

Our Vista La Mesa school campus has recently experienced an increase in unfortunate student behaviors encouraged by social media influencers and challenges such as the "devious licks" challenge. These challenges dare students to perform a themed challenge that usually results in serious consequences to both school sites and individuals. September saw many schools, including VLMA, suffer from serious acts of vandalism costing thousands of dollars and the closure or several of our restrooms while repairs were made to fixtures, plumbing, and tiles.

A USA Today article recently shared, "This month, that havoc could reach a new level, resulting in physical violence against teachers and other school employees...

In September, its inaugural month, the so-called “devious licks" trend challenged students to steal and vandalize school property...

According to a list that’s been circulating online, this month’s challenge is to “smack a staff member.” Challenges for subsequent months range from “mess up school signs” and “flip off the front office” to “kiss your friend’s girlfriend at school” and “jab a breast.”

We ask for your continued partnership in helping us create a safe and functioning school campus where our cheetah scholars can grow and thrive. Join us in explicitly speaking to your child about the power they have to build such a campus or to harm it. It brings us no joy in having to issue the sometimes severe consequences for destructive, harassing, or aggressive behaviors on campus, but we are confident that in building positive relationships with our students and with your help, we can continually and positively impact our school climate and community.

As Seen on Campus!

This week as admin visited classes we spied this bright and beautiful door created by the genius of Mrs. Ayer's students! It reminded me of the hand we all play in creating the kind of school we want for our cheetah scholars. We each bring something beautiful to this campus and we each have the skill to build OneVista. Our hands help, heal, comfort, lift, cheer, build, and create! No two are alike!
Big picture

Anchored 4 Life Makes Their Debut!

The Anchored 4 Life program is back in action at Vista La Mesa Academy! Anchored 4 Life is currently comprised of SEVEN cheetah scholars who are trained to work as Team Leaders. The students in the program are selected by the teacher's recommendation and work along side their adult advisors: Mrs. Dominguez and Mrs. Zaroyan to help us build a welcoming and supporting OneVista school community. They have already welcomed several new families to VLMA!

The Anchored 4 Life program provides additional services for our students that need support in any of the following:
  • Deployment
  • Transition
  • Entering the school as a new student and a few other difficulties and challenges that students living the military lifestyle and culture face.

While originally designed to support our cheetahs in military families, our OneVista philosophy means that ALL students have access to the supports of Anchored 4 Life!
The students that are Team Leaders in the Anchored 4 Life program are trained to work with their peers and provide support and encouragement when they having difficulties or facing challenges. This peer partnership allows students the opportunity to connect with someone much like themselves. It allows for our students to not only find the peer support they may need at different points in their school experience but to also grow our own cheetah leaders to be those supports!

This week we saw our Anchored 4 Life student leaders welcoming several new students and helping them become more familiar with campus and build new friendships as they became a part of our OneVista school family.

A special thank you to the student leaders of Anchored 4 Life and their adult advisors!

Despite COVID restrictions, our PTA is a vital part of the life and success of our campus! The 2 classes with the highest membership percentage to PTA will earn an ice-cream party! Woop woop!

Our PTA meetings are held the first Thursday of every month at 3:45pm via Zoom.

We can't wait to see what our PTA has in store for us this year!

If your child is quarantining...

Unfortunately, our Cheetah Scholars may be sent home to quarantine either due to a positive C-19 test, being a close contact of a classmate or family member, or exhibiting symptoms. In such cases, it is important that your scholar continues to learn and grow despite being away from campus. Please be sure to pick up your student's Independent Study Contract and the work for the duration of their absence. Upon return from their quarantine, students will turn in this completed work so that their absences will not count against their attendance. Please call our office or contact your teacher with any questions about this process.
