Meet Kathleen Clayton, Workforce Development Coordinator

I wear many hats at the CTC with the bulk of my activities focusing on the Workforce Development needs of our students and our area employers. Workforce Development is defined as “an interconnected set of solutions to meet employment needs”.


The various programs and initiatives I work with are primarily focused on helping to prepare our students with necessary knowledge and skills, emphasizing the value of workplace or hands-on learning, to address the hiring demands of our region’s employers.

Kathleen also coordinates, supervises, and/or works with...

· Industrial Maintenance training programs for the Southeast Missouri Industrial Training Group (SRITG) helping incumbent workers employed by area companies such as Mondi, HAVCO, Buzzi-Unicem USA and Nestle-Purina to gain additional knowledge and skills which are critical to their current job or to help employees gain advanced skills in order to move into higher level positions within their company.

· Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) Journeyman Apprenticeship Training program which trains employees of local electrical contractors to become Certified Professional Electricians.

· Motorcycle Safety Training to teach students basic riding skills and safety techniques for motorcycle riders to help keep riders and drivers safer on the road.

· Placement Services to connect students with employment and internship opportunities with area employers. I also coordinate opportunities for businesses to advertise, recruit and hire our current students and graduates across all programs offered at the CTC by advertising positions on our Jobs Board, via push notifications to email, text and social media.

· Developing Customized and Contract training classes and programs with area employers to create training that is specific to a company’s needs. Training can occur here at CTC or on-site at the company or business.

· ACT WorkKeys Job Profiling. As an Authorized Job Profiler, I work with area companies to collect information and determine the skills and skill levels necessary for successful job performance. Job applicants then take the WorkKeys tests to see if they have what it takes to obtain a job with that employer.

· Writing and Managing Grant Proposals to obtain new/updated equipment and provide training to either enhance current programs or develop new training that will ultimately benefit both students and regional employers.

THREE THINGS KATHLEEN WANTS YOU TO KNOW ABOUT WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT:

1. I’m the “Chandler Bing” of the CTC – most people have no idea what I do because workforce development is not just ONE thing. If you’re not sure if I can be of assistance to you, stop by and see me, shoot me an email or give me a call.

2. Most of my work is done “behind the scenes”, but my focus is to always be improving our training programs so that both students and employers can benefit from what we have to offer here at CTC.

3. I love helping people and my job lets me do that every day in very different and creative ways.

MARCH'S PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

The Emergency Medical Technician Program (EMT) is designed to take high school students with little or no medical background and teach them to work on an ambulance using Basic Life Support Measures. This career education program is set up for students who are currently enrolled in high school and are taking the class as a part of their high school education. THREE THINGS CHARITY HUFF WANTS YOU TO KNOW ABOUT EMT:

1. EMT program provides AMAZING opportunities for hands on learning! The secondary high school EMT program requires 80 hours of clinical experience outside the classroom with them being in local emergency room hospital settings, ambulance services, and/or fire stations. The student will work with emergency service personnel to receive hands on/real experience training that is second to none! If you are looking at a career field in any medical field, including the EMS fields (medical, fire, or police), nursing, or pre-med then this is the program for you.


2. The Curriculum includes how to properly assess patients, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, management of medical conditions and traumatic injuries, management of obstetrical emergencies, caring for infant and pediatric emergencies and ambulance operations. Also included in the program will be a variety of specialized areas of training to include Emergency Vehicle Operation driving course, vehicle extrication, ACLS for the EMT, PEARS, and hazardous material training.


3. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of skills and knowledge of procedures and equipment to function as an EMT. Students will be able to fulfill the job responsibilities of an EMT and will be able to utilize their own critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students will be prepared to sit for, and successfully complete a secure NREMT credentialing format exam.

Student SpotLight: Katrina Stevenson

What high school are you from? I am a senior at Cape Central High School.

What made you choose EMT? My dad has health problems and I've always wanted to help people. My cousin took the program a couple years ago and I found out more about the program on the tour we took of the CTC my sophomore year.

What are your plans when you finish this program? I plan on using my A+ scholarship money to complete my general education at Cape College Center and do the Paramedic program at the CTC next year.

What have you learned that has made a difference to you? You never know what is going to happen on your 8-12 hour shifts on the ambulance. The shift goes by really fast and you get an adrenaline rush when things happen. I've learned that I can act quickly on my feet. I don't second guess myself and I am confident in the skills that Mrs. Huff has taught us.

What advice do you have for a student considering being a student at the CTC? Be prepared to see a lot. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new. You never know where it could lead you.

What are your hobbies? I participate in track, tennis and FBLA. I work at BG's and like going to the gym, and hanging out with my dad and my friends.

Childcare Careers

This course is designed to prepare students for employment in the Early Childhood field. Students will learn about how to plan an effective program, and learn how to observe/record children's behavior. Students will participate in providing a safe and healthy learning environment for children. They will build a positive productive relationship with families and will maintain a commitment to professionalism. Students will have the opportunity to acquire the 480 hours of instruction and work experience needed to receive a CDA (Child Development Associate) credential. They are also require to complete 120 hours, including 10 hours in each of the 8 CDA subject areas.

TWO THINGS KARA LEGRAND WANTS YOU TO KNOW ABOUT CHILD CARE:

1. Each year my students have competed at Skills USA STATE competition for Early Childhood they have either received 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the State of Missouri and 3 students have advanced to Nationals. This year again I have 2 students going to participate and I'm hoping for a 1st place!! They have been practicing for the past month and are going to continue to do so until we leave the first week in April.


2. Students who are Seniors who have a love for children and want to work with them in the future then this class is the class for them. I have a lot of students who are wanting to be teachers in the future and they take this course to get that hands-on experience to see if they want to seriously continue this occupation. Many of them typically want to be a preschool teacher for the public school or want to teach Pre-K to 3rd grade.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: SARAH HINMAN

What high school are you from? I am a senior at Cape Central High School.

What made you choose this program? I found out about this program when I went on a tour of the CTC. My eyes lit up when I saw the classroom and when I met Miss Kara, I knew for sure I wanted to take this program. I have always been interested in working with kids, especially ones with disabilities because my sister, Camryn, has Down Syndrome. Working with kids comes natural to me--I love it!

What are your plans after high school? I plan on joining the Army. I leave for Basic Training in May. Next year, I will join the ROTC program at Central Missouri University and major in Forensic Psychology and Childcare. My ultimate goal is to open up a daycare for kids with special needs.

What have you learned that has made a difference to you? I've learned so much from the kids I work with! I've learned no matter what is going on in my life, I can still be happy. Even when I'm having a bad day, the kids I work with brighten my day and help me to see the good. Working with the kids is the best feeling in the world!

What advice do you have for a student considering being a student at the CTC? Don't just take the class because your friends are. Put all your effort into it and get something out of it. Find your passion in what you're doing and fully commit to it. The CTC is a "career-starter." Don't be scared because it's like a college--the teachers and staff are very welcoming!

What are your hobbies? I enjoy singing, writing books, playing with kids, and spending time with my nine nieces and nephews.

What is one thing about you that would surprise people? I've been through a lot in my life, but I still remain upbeat and positive.

BASIC FLIGHT

For those individuals intending a career in aviation industry, this course is designed to provide the initial phases of ground and flight training prescribed by Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) part 61.

Students will receive a possible 10 hours of flight observations and 5 hours of aircraft practical flight instruction. Successful students will be eligible to complete the FAA Private Pilot written exam and pursue a student pilot certificate status.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Brodie Martin

What high school are you from? I am a senior at Jackson High School.

What made you choose Basic Flight? One of the guys I play soccer with told me about the program and had great things to say about Mr. Grossheider and the Basic Flight program. I have always had an interest in flying and I wanted to try something outside of my comfort zone. Who else can say they get to fly planes their senior year of high school--that's pretty cool!

What are your plans when you finish this program? I plan to join the Air Force.

What have you learned that has made a difference to you? I have learned that I can do anything I put my mind to. Mr. Grossheider has helped me realize my full potential. His teaching style makes you learn and helps you absorb the information. He explains WHY we are learning what we are and HOW we are going to use it in the real world. We won't forget what he teaches us. He doesn't just tell us to get on our computers and go to a link--he's more of a hands-on teacher and that's why we all learn so much from him.

What advice do you have for a student considering being a student at the CTC? Look into the program you are interested in and do research about it. You will get training at the CTC that you can't get at your high school. Once you choose a program and get in it, be ready to work. The instructors expect a lot out of their students.

What are your hobbies? I enjoy physical activities, especially playing soccer. I am also part of J-crew and am in NTHS. I also really enjoy spending time with friends and helping my family whenever I can.

What is one thing about you that would surprise people? I am working on a Mercedes. It's really cool to know it's running because of my efforts working on it.

MACHINE TOOL TECHNOLOGY

This course is designed to prepare students for entry-level manufacturing jobs in the precision machining trades. Students will learn to operate a power saw, drill press, lathe, mill, and surface grinder. Fabrication and resurfacing of cutting tools will be taught. Students will interpret design specifications and technical drawings from which items will be reproduced. Quality control data will also be analyzed.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Sam Asher

What high school are you from? I am a senior at Cape Central High School.

What made you choose Machine Tool Technology? I chose Machine Tool Technology because I wanted to do a hands-on program. My dad saw this program in the flyer sent to our house and told me he thought this program would be a good fit for me...and he was right!

What are your plans when you finish this program? I plan on using my A+ scholarship and do the Machining program at Linn Tech next year.

What have you learned that has made a difference to you? EVERYTHING Mr. Sink has taught us has made a big difference to me. I started this program not knowing a thing about machining. Mr. Sink started with the basics and has taught us so much. I feel like I am more than capable of doing anything in a machine shop.

What advice do you have for a student considering being a student at the CTC? There is nothing to be nervous about. You will make friends very quickly. The training you'll get here is useful, beneficial, and very worthwhile. You'll leave the program with a skill you can use in the workforce.

What are your hobbies? I enjoy working after school at FTZ Performance where I build exhausts.

National Technical Honor Society Induction Ceremony

On March 6, 2018, fifty students were inducted into the National Honor Society. NTHS is committed to the recognition of excellence in every area of career and technical education, student achievement, and community service. The NTHS members who we are celebrating have met the following criteria for acceptance:


*A senior earning a grade of B+ or better in their career education program and have a cumulative grade point average of 8.0 or better on an 11.0 scale or a 3.0 on better on a 4.0 scale.

*no more than 5 absences for the academic year.

*Exhibit good character, creditable achievement, and be recommended by their career program instructor.
