An Update from Perkiomen Valley Middle School West

A Word From Mr. Creeden

This past week we were thankful to have Robert Hackenson Jr. from Dynamic Influence come to PV West to share the importance of cell phone and social media safety and responsibility. Robert entertained and informed as he spoke about topics such as how screen time effects our mental health, digital communication and miscommunication, and cyber safety issues with online challenges, posting personal information, and online predators. Please see some pics below from his presentation here at West and also see below for more information regarding his presentation to parents this past Monday evening.

The PSSA's are coming up next week. During our ELA PSSA testing days on Tuesday 4/25, Wednesday 4/26, and Thursday 4/28 there will be an adjusted schedule (see below). We ask that during this assessment period you encourage your child to do his/her best and to be

sure he/she takes time to obtain a good night’s sleep and to eat a nourishing breakfast. The

Assessment FAQs and Electronic Device Letter serve to address questions you may have, however, do not hesitate to contact our office at 484-977-7210. Thank you for your attention to these assessments.

March West Students of the Month🏆

This week we recognized our WEST Strong March students of the month. Each of these students received an Amazon gift card and PV Strong sunglasses. They were chosen by their teaching teams as students who have consistently modeled the WEST Strong characteristics throughout the past month and school year. Those characteristics are Caring, Respectful, and Responsible. We are very proud of our students of the month and look forward to recognizing many more students in the coming months. See below for pics of our March students of the month.

What's Up @ West

A Visit to The Berman Museum of Art

The East and West Art Club members toured The Berman Museum of Art at the Ursinus College Campus in Collegeville on Thursday, April 20th. As a teaching museum on a liberal arts college campus, the Berman Museum of Art fosters a greater understanding of the visual arts in the learning process and society at large. The students were guided through the indoor art and outdoor sculpture exhibits by the museum's curator and some of the college's art students. They also participated in outdoor sketching and Model Magic sculpting activities. The PV Art Department used a portion of the Art & Food Truck Festival proceeds to cover the cost for students. Thank you to Betsy Witt for hosting us and supplying us with all of the art materials needed, as well as organizing the student docents. We look forward to keeping a relationship with Ursinus and the Berman Museum in the future.

All West students will be participating in some or all of the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) starting next week in to and early May. Middle School West Art Show

West's Annual Spring Art Show is this Thursday, April 27th, from 5-7:30PM. All students with art in the show received a personal email with details included. Most work will remain up in the library and art hallway for a few weeks after in case you cannot make the scheduled event. Hope to see you there!

Take Your Child To Work Day

We recognize that Take Your Child To Work Day is this coming Thursday April 28th. If you are considering taking your child to work on this day please complete this form. Your response will serve as your written excuse for your child's absence. If you have 2 children at West, please complete 2 forms so that we can be sure to update attendance accordingly in our system.

Please be aware, if your child has 10 or more absences accumulated this year, this will be considered an unexcused absence, however no action will be taken in regards to this day. Thank You.

Facility Dog @ West Feedback

PV West is exploring the possibility of obtaining a facility (therapy) dog. There are quite a few steps that need to occur prior to introducing or purchasing a facility dog at West. We would like to hear your feedback as we consider these steps. Facility dogs are known for their ability to provide emotional support to students and staff and are anticipated to be a healthy addition to PV West.

In advance of this message, PV has conducted quite a bit of research into these dogs over the past 2 years, and there are currently several school districts who have successfully implemented a Facility Dog program. What have they found? Their dog has helped to calm students who are anxious, crying and overwhelmed with stress, and their dog has substantially increased the overall morale in the building.

To learn more about Facility Dogs in schools, feel free to check out the following article: https://www.nassp.org/2021/03/16/therapy-dog-programs-improving-student-and-staff-well-being/

Also, check out the Facility Dog program at East Penn School District: https://eastpenntherapydogs.weebly.com/

Please complete this brief 2-3 minute survey so we can ascertain parental support for this initiative. Thank You!

Nurse Notes - Physical and Dental Exams

Parents of 6th grade students, please know that you are required to submit a physical form for your child during this school year. In addition, if your child receives any immunizations, please submit those as well. Prior to the start of 7th grade, your child will need to receive the Tdap and Meningitis vaccinations, so now is a good time to get those immunizations!

Parents of 7th grade students are required to submit a dental form for your child.

The school physician and the school dentist will be at Middle School West in the Spring of 2023, and your child will be seen by them if the proper form is not handed in prior.

Tween Talk Group

Tweens, ages 11 to 13, are invited to chat in a fun, informal atmosphere with Erin McMonagle, a guidance counselor at Perkiomen Valley East Middle School - as part of our Julia’s Joy Youth Empowerment Program. We have created a safe group, where they can come relax, unload and learn they are not alone all while meeting new friends. We believe learning Stress Management tips will help youth deal with the pressures they are feeling at this age and into the future!

This group is free thanks to donations, if you would like to make a donation, it is always appreciated, but not necessary!

Learn more about our workshops and our mission at http://www.JuliasJoy.org

Be Part of the Conversation - Upcoming Programs

We are a collaboration of community leaders, clinicians, students, school district representatives, and families who believe that having meaningful, inclusive conversations about substance use and addiction will support individuals and their families in their efforts to develop healthy coping skills and access support whenever there is a need. Learn more about us. See the link below for a number of programs that Be a Part of the Conversation offers.

PV West Attendance Information

If your child will be absent or missing any class time, please send an email (from the email you have listed in our new SIS system) to:

MSWAttendance@pvsd.org

This will count as your call-out AND parent excuse. Please indicate in your email the date of absence, student’s grade and the reason for the absence. An absence is considered unexcused when the child’s school has not received an email or written parent note providing an acceptable reason for the absence, within a 3-day period.

You may also call our attendance line at: 1 (484) 977-7210, option 1. If you do this, you would still need to submit an email with the above information in order for it to be excused.

Any medical notes or Dr.'s notes should be placed in the Attendance Box, right outside the Guidance Department.

If you have any questions at all, please contact Lori Tropea at ltropea@pvsd.org or you may call her at x3540.

PVSD Food Service Updates

Parents/Guardians put money in their student(s) accounts electronically in SchoolCafe or by sending cash or checks in with their students. For more information about SchoolCafe please go to https://www.pvsd.org/departments/food-service/school-cafe-information/. If you are sending funds in with your students, please note the students’ names and account number on the envelope and ask them to give the envelope to their cashier in the cafeteria.

Upon entering the serving area, students make their selections and enter their 6 digit Student ID number on the pin pad or scanner. Our staff will be happy to help them become more comfortable with the system.

Big picture

Safe2Say

Our students can submit an anonymous tip through the Safe2Say Program. Tips are typically related to a variety of challenges our students experience or witness, such as bullying, harassment, disrespectful language, safety concerns, etc. When a tip is received, the State (who runs Safe2Say) immediately follows up with building administrators.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

Did you know that the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisit Lifeline?

When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.

https://988lifeline.org/current-events/the-lifeline-and-988/

The previous Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis.
