FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School :: September 16th, 2013
The FHS is a monthly on-line school newsletter. It will be emailed to you through School Reach. There will be weekly reminders of important events and activities that are planned for the upcoming week.
Dear Parents and Members of the OLQHS Community
I want to welcome everyone back to Our Lady Queen of Heaven School. It is obvious this is an exciting year for OLQHS. The construction of the New Middle School building is underway. The students are being entertained by the big trucks and the different construction equipment we are now seeing around the football field. I realize that we will all need to be patient with one another and flexible. When you become a teacher, you must learn that flexibility is a characteristic you must have to continue in this career.
OLQHS is so fortunate to have a wonderful staff this year. I am very pleased with our new teachers and with change in some of the teachers’ position.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have taken the time to return the Free and Reduced forms. This helps us to qualify for Erate funds which are funds that we all pay for through a tax on our phones. It is not a lot of money but if it helps to keep tuition down, it is important. Thank you.
OLQHS is an incredible place to be.
Ms. JoAnn

Year of Faith
Pope Francis
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning!
In the Creed, immediately after professing our faith in the Holy Spirit, we say: “I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church”. There is a profound connection between these two realities of faith: indeed it is the Holy Spirit who gives life to the Church, who guides her steps. Without the constant presence and action of the Holy Spirit the Church could not live and could not carry out the task that the Risen Jesus entrusted to her: to go and make disciples of all nations (cf. Mt 28:19).
Evangelizing is the Church’s mission. It is not the mission of only a few, but it is mine, yours and our mission. The Apostle Paul exclaimed: “Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel!” (1 Cor 9:16). We must all be evangelizers, especially with our life! Paul VI stressed that “Evangelizing is... the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She exists in order to evangelize”
Who is the real driving force of evangelization in our life and in the Church? Paul VI wrote clearly: “it is the Holy Spirit who today, just as at the beginning of the Church, acts in every evangelizer who allows himself to be possessed and led by him. The Holy Spirit places on his lips the words which he could not find by himself, and at the same time the Holy Spirit predisposes the soul of the hearer to be open and receptive to the Good News and to the Kingdom being proclaimed (ibid., n. 75). To evangelize, therefore, it is necessary to open ourselves once again to the horizon of God’s Spirit, without being afraid of what he asks us or of where he leads us. Let us entrust ourselves to him! He will enable us to live out and bear witness to our faith, and will illuminate the heart of those we meet.“Instant Wisdom”
What is Close Reading?
A close reading is a careful and purposeful reading. Well actually, it’s rereading. It’s a careful and purposeful rereading of a text. It’s an encounter with the text where students really focus on what the author had to say, what the author’s purpose was, what the words mean, and what the structure of the text tells us.
In a close reading, we have to have students reread the text. We give them questions; text dependent questions that require that they go back into the text and search for answers. These aren’t simply recall questions, just the facts of the text, but rather questions that allow students to think about the text, and the author’s purpose, the structure, and the flow of the text.
Close reading requires that students actually think and understand what they are reading.
Close reading isn’t in the Common Core State Standards. However, an analysis of the Common Core State Standards really says you’ve got to learn the text well. The Common Core State Standards require that students provide evidence and justification for their answers. The only way we know how students can do this - that they really learn to provide evidence and justification - is if they closely read.
When we have students really read carefully, they pay attention to the words, the ideas, the structure, the flow, and the purpose of that text, they’re ready to answer more complex questions that require that they really think about what the author said, and compare that with what they know, what they believe, and what they think.

Cornerstone Capital Campaign
Thank you to all who have supported the Capital Campaign!
To date, we have raised 90% of our goal. This has allowed us to break ground on Phase I, the new middle school building, and plan for Phase II, the renovation of existing classrooms and relocation of grades (PK, K, 4, 3) to the main campus. You will see great progress this fall and into the spring as the building goes up. Our plan is to have the middle school building open and all students together, on the west side of Creole Street, for the 2014 -2015 school year. With all of the campaign’s success over the past year, we are still not at 100%. In order to finish the project in its entirety, including Phase III – the relocation of the Early Childhood Center – we still need your help. If you are interested in making a donation to the campaign or would like more information, please contact Megan O’Quin at 477-7349 or moquin@olqhs. org. Thank you for your support and help continuing the legacy of OLQHS!
“Layers of Legacy” Courtyard
There is still time to purchase your brick in the “Layers of Legacy” Courtyard! In the new OLQHS middle school building, there will be a brick courtyard where students will be able to congregate, learn and perform school activities. You have the opportunity to purchase a brick for this courtyard for yourself, a loved one, an organization or business, or in memoriam. Bricks may be purchased in increments of $100, $250, $500 and $1,000. We hope you will join us in making a lasting tribute, paving the way for generations to come!
Please contact Megan O’Quin at 477-7349 or moquin@olqhs.org for more information.
The deadline for purchasing bricks is December 31, 2013.
