Manitou Springs High School

January 27th, 2023

From The Principal

It has been so energizing to visit numerous classrooms and attend so many events this week! Some moments I have gotten to be part of this week range from applauding a Bluegrass band performing for the Jazz Band students to observing students in our SSN program doing a light experiment to meeting some of our incoming students for 2023-24 during our Welcome Night!

Additionally, we would like to celebrate a couple of our seniors who recently earned exciting achievements:

  • Jack Embery earned his Private Pilot's License on Monday! Jack invested copious hours studying and flying, and intends to pursue the next two certifications in his Aviation pathway!

  • Elanor Fugate was recognized as a qualifier for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program (our first in recent history, and maybe ever)! She will be competing against students from around the country to potentially be recognized on a national level!

Thank you to their families, and to the numerous staff members who have been major parts of each of their educational journeys! Congrats!

Have a lovely weekend!

MSHS Welcome Night for Incoming Students

SheTech

Manitou Springs High School students had an exciting day and learned about career opportunities in technology. SheTech is a one-day event for 9th and 10th grade female students featuring hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Students rotated through STEM-related hands-on workshops and met with female leaders from a variety of backgrounds and industries like the tech industry, Cyber Security, Network Engineers, Project Managers and more.

Bluegrass Performance

We had some special guests Wednesday afternoon. Stillhouse Junkies from Durango stopped by the SILC and put on a Bluegrass performance for our students. They are currently artists in residence up at GreenBox and wanted to come in to play for our students and share about their lives as working artists. -- Thanks for visiting!

JSEP

Astronaut "Digger" inspired the Manitou Springs High School's inaugural Junior Space Entrepreneur Program (JSEP). He told students how he was failing school and how his love of motorcycles, respect for hard work, and learning a skill changed everything! U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Duane "Digger" Carey flew the Shuttle Columbia in 2002 (last flight before it crashed) to the Hubble Telescope for an upgrade mission. He emphasized that everyone on the team needs to do more than their fair share AND that the most important thing now is to learn how to learn. Last, students got hooked on planning and executing their "impossible" dreams!
