GREETINGS MILL CREEK FAMILIES
This week our school mascot, Cosmo, welcomed his good friend from iReady, Plory, to our school. Cosmo and Plory had a great time visiting classrooms and talking with students about iReady and Cougar Pride. We have included a few photos of their visit, below.
It’s Time to Celebrate Our Teachers!
The first week of May will arrive next week and it is always a great reason to celebrate, since it is officially Teacher Appreciation Week! Think for a minute about a favorite teacher in your life. Where might we be without these special people who inspired us, supported us, encouraged us and helped us see ourselves in bigger, better ways than perhaps we saw ourselves? We are so proud of the dedicated, caring and extremely hard-working teaching staff we have the privilege to work with each day. The opportunities we have to watch them in action inspire us. They understand the power and influence they have to positively change young lives forever and we are the lucky ones who continually get to see and hear examples of this, one small interaction at a time. Through another pandemic school year, our determined and hard-working teaching staff have shown up each day, ready to do what it takes to be what our student and family community has needed from them. Next week, we will celebrate them and thank them for the difference they make! If you are especially appreciative of your child(ren)’s teacher(s) this year, please consider sharing your thoughts with them in a message or note, since your simple gratitude is the very best gift of all. Thank you to our dear wonderful Mill Creek teachers!
WA State Testing Information and Schedule for 3rd 4th and 5th Graders:
Each Spring, we administer the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade, although due to the pandemic, this did not take place in 2020 or 2021. Additionally, 5th grade students take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment in Science (WCAS). Students in middle school and high school take these state tests as well. For information about the spring administration of the SBA and WCAS, please view our district’s Family Information and Resources page: https://www.everettsd.org/Page/16044
Additional information can be found on our district’s Assessment webpage, where you can select any grade level to see what assessments your student will take this year, then select the assessment to learn more about it: https://www.everettsd.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=29112
MCE 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will test on the following days/dates in May:
· English Language Arts SBA: Tuesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 19
· Math SBA: Tuesday, May 24 and Thursday, May 26
MCE 5th grade students will test on the following additional day/date in May:
· Science Assessment: Thursday, May 12
Teachers are helping students understand the format of this test by administering practice tests and working through sample questions now. Families can help by encouraging students to take these tests seriously and giving their best effort. Additionally, we ask that you ensure your child is present on the scheduled testing days, as long as they are healthy. Getting a good night’s sleep and eating a complete breakfast will further set them up for success. Thank you for helping our students have the best possible opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and learning of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which serves as the foundation for instruction.
PTA Thanks:
Our hard-working PTA continues to support students in a variety of creative ways! We greatly appreciate the April Community Parent Night spotlighting the topic of mental health, as well as our monthly popcorn Friday, our weekly Cougar Movers, and ‘Wear Your Favorite Color’ Spirit Day. We also know the PTA is hard at work preparing to bring Science Day to our school next month, and a Food Drive next week. See flyer at the end of this message. Thank you to our amazing PTA!
Thanks for taking the time to read this entire newsletter so you can be informed of important school news. We wish you a wonderful month!

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and MCEPTA is excited to recognize and celebrate the diverse AAPI community within MCE. AAPI is an umbrella term and includes cultures and identities that span the East, the Southeast, the Indian subcontinent and the Pacific Islands. For our Monthly Diverse Book Drive, we highlight books by AAPI authors, that feature characters from these areas, experiences within these countries, and Asian-American families and experiences. Please visit our website for more information on AAPI Heritage Month and the monthly book drive.
Would you like to donate a book from our wish list? Check it out here! Donated books will be added to the MCE Library for all students and staff to access.
Do you have a book or theme recommendation? Please let us know here.
