SARGENT HOLDS HISTORIC GRADUATION CEREMONY
With COVID-19 comes many questions and uncertainties of what a graduation could look like in schools around the world. As we all know, the traditional graduation from 100+ years past, will not look the same or be held in the same format. However, we have and will hold our graduation ceremony at the Star Drive-In in Monte Vista, CO on May 15, 2020 gates open at 7pm. Ceremony will begin at dark. Working with Emily Brown from the Rio Grande Public Health Department, we are putting into place protocols, requirements and restrictions for using the Star Drive-In.
The requirements and restrictions are as follows:
Only one to four cars per graduate family.
Windows in vehicle(s) need to stay up.
Bathrooms are available and concessions will be available, however a two person limit with masks and gloves on are required.
Most of the ceremony will be pre-recorded and shown on the big screen. The only real time will be when graduates pick up diplomas on a platform.
Graduates will NOT be up on the platforms together, only one at a time to receive their diploma. Honking can be your form of applause.
All graduates will wear face masks and gloves. Students will pick up the diploma on their own (labeled) from a table on the platform and walk back to their car.
No family member will be allowed to get out of their car to take pictures. Pictures from the inside of the car are allowed.
Parking will be assigned and each graduate will be given the proper car tag for each family car (up to 4 cars per graduate) before the ceremony. If a car does not have the proper tag, no entrance will be allowed.
After the ceremony, all cars will need to leave the premises due to a movie being shown. If you want to stay for the movie, you will need to leave and come back through the entrance.
We will have a live stream available on Facebook and on YouTube - these links will be given to seniors to pass on to their families once we get them.
We will be using Screen Two - tune your radios to FM channel 88.1.
NOTE: Subject to change

STUDENT LED DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS VIA GOOGLE CLASSROOM
Clay and Jeni announce all birthdays from Kinder through 12th grades, as well as any staff birthdays. They also include any information that is pertinent to instruction and/or scheduling.
Another area that they emphasize is a "Leader in Me" quote to remind students of the habits that lead to a successful life.
TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK (May 4 - 8)
"Political and educational leaders began discussions for a day to honor teachers in 1944. In 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim National Teachers’ Day. Congress declared March 7, 1980, as National Teacher Day. The National Education Association continued to observe Teacher Day on the first Tuesday in March until 1985 when the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week of May. The NEA Representative Assembly then voted to make the Tuesday of that week National Teacher Day" (Nationaldaycalendar.com).
Teachers play an important role in educating and shaping the lives of our students. I ask that you and/or your child reach out via email, text message, phone call, a card or letter recognizing and showing your appreciation to their teachers. During the COVID-19 online instruction, our teachers have done an outstanding job of educating each of you!
Please thank them!!
WELCOME TO HIGH SCHOOL - UPCOMING FRESHMAN AND PARENTS
Dear Sargent Freshman Students and Parents,
Welcome to High School! All of us at Sargent High School are looking forward to welcoming each of you on August 19, 2020; the first day of school. As always the beginning of a new year is full of great anticipation and excitement. You are taking the next steps in your educational career that will soon lead you out into the world arena where you will make great impacts. The Sargent Staff and myself are here to work with you and your parents to ensure that you receive high-quality education in an effective safe environment.
Freshman, you must also do your part to ensure your success; attend school daily and arrive on time, get involved in clubs, sports, activities that you are interested in, demonstrate respect toward your peers, teachers, staff and self, and work hard to self-advocate. Sargent is a Leader in Meⓒ school which means that “we empower each student with the leadership and life skills that they will need to thrive in the 21st Century. Students learn how to become self-reliant, take initiative, plan ahead, set and track goals, do their homework, prioritize their time, manage their emotions, be considerate of others, express their viewpoint persuasively, resolve conflicts, find creative solutions, value differences, and live a balanced life. The process helps students develop the skills and self-confidence they need to lead their lives and succeed in school and beyond.”
Parents, we understand that a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. During your child’s high school career, we will call upon you to participate in meetings, serve on committees or just have a voice and say in how our partnership can grow. As partners, we share the responsibility for student success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring the above stated qualities.
I am honored to be a part of a school community with a legacy, history and commitment to student achievement. I am proud of the students, teachers, and staff of Sargent Secondary and we will continue to build on the strong traditions of this community. I am extremely excited about leading Sargent Secondary this coming school year. We look forward to working in collaboration with all of you in educating our Sargent High School students.
Reach out to us via email and/or phone if you have any questions. I look forward to meeting and greeting you soon!

ABC - Sargent Secondary's Academic Booster Club - NEEDS YOU!
We recognize students who achieve the Honor Roll each semester, we sponsor the Student of the Month program, organize send-offs for students who earn their way to state competitions in Science Fair, History Day, FBLA, FFA and Knowledge Bowl. We also host the Teacher Appreciation Lunch in May, provide meals for teachers during Parent/Teacher Conferences throughout the year, and give teachers and staff appreciation gifts at the start of school, at Christmas, and at the end of the year. We also will support funding any academic items, if requested and funds are available.
As you can tell, we do our best to give our hard-working students and staff the recognition and support they deserve. However, this is not done with the wave of a magic wand or the saying of some magical phrase. It is accomplished with monetary support, dedication, organization and help from parents and staff.
The Academic Booster Club meets quarterly or more often, if needed, in the high school library. We generally keep our meetings to an hour or less. We need parents who are willing to serve on the committee to assist in making decisions, planning, helping out when needed and/or with monetary support.
We would like as many parents, teachers, and staff to participate to hopefully have 7th through 12th grades represented.
Please consider becoming an active part of the Academic Booster Club (ABC). YOU can help make a positive impact on Sargent JH/HS students and staff!
If you would like to join this amazing team or have any questions, please contact Traci Holmes at 719-580-0273 or Tonya Wenta at 719-850-1960.
