Ice and Snow, Snow and Ice
The kiddos were engaged in fun “snow” play all week ... They have great imaginations :) We started the week off with letter “Ii” is for Ice :) We are continuing our snow study and the children have had so much fun exploring snow and ice already ... but there is more work to do ;)
Next week we will extend our study to look at animals that live in the polar regions, and then talk about adaptations that animals have, which will bring us finally to what humans need to wear to stay warm in the cold :)
We practiced making Letter Ii in books and on wipeoff boards :)
We hunted for letter Ii words in our classroom :)
We made all different letters by tracing in salt :)
We also played letter games, using games to work on fine motor skills and letter identification. Our friends are all at different places in these pre-writing and pre-reading skills, so we try to offer a variety of options for them to get interested in :)
During the week, we did some experimenting with ice ... dripping water on ice blocks to crack the mystery of what’s inside ... it was pompoms!!
These friends were all so serious in their exploration ... they had a job to do and they worked at it until they got the ice to melt and free their pompoms!
We took some time to work on Rhyming Words this week. We do a lot of rhyming songs and fingerplays and we want to encourage all our kiddos to hear and, eventually try to produce rhyming pairs of words :) This is a great pre-reading skill for down the road :)
One math game this week was tossing snowballs onto a snowman poster, and then matching groups of snowmen to different numbers - fun!
We read MORE books about snow, snowmen, and snow activities!!
“The Biggest, Best Snowman” was a favorite, as was “Pete the Cat’s Snow Daze.” “The Snowy Day” has been read and reread, and our friends have enjoyed cuddling with dolls of Peter, the main character.
Do you want to build a snowman?
More photos from the week :)
Working on our hallway display!
More mitten games continued from last week ... Mitten Hide and Seek!
