Principal's Message
We had a wonderful week of learning at the Bridge! A special thank you to Mrs. Albertson, our wonderful music teacher, for organizing our Dragon Scales chorus this year. These students had their first official performance last night at Fort Mill's annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. They did an amazing job representing our school! School Counseling with Mrs. Redden
November focused on our Erin’s Law Lessons teaching about safety, body boundaries, and safe and unsafe secrets. Kindergarten through 3rd graders learned about a Trusted Triangle. The Trusted Triangle is 3 grown-up buddy’s who can drive a car that students can go to if they need to be helped and heard. Examples of grown-up buddies include parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, coaches, etc. Fourth and Fifth graders learned about having a Safety Network. The Safety Network includes grown-up buddies and friends that you can trust and talk to if they need to be helped and heard. The Safety Network can have more than 3 grown-up buddies. Kindergarteners also learned how to use their safety stop sign and I mean business voice if a situation feels unsafe. First grade, 3rd through 5th graders also discuss personal space and body boundaries. Students discussed how to use your voice to tell someone they are making you feel uncomfortable. Examples included someone standing too close to you, touching your hair, or a hug that squeezes too tight. Second graders focused on having PLAN for when they leave the house. PLAN stands for permissions, location, activity and names and numbers. All the students did a great job learning these tools for their safety tool belts.
PE with Coach Liebler and Coach Starnes
It’s time to lace ‘em up and hoop it up! We are focusing on basketball skills this month! As we cover dribbling, passing, shooting, and general basketball skills, we have been sharing with our students some key points to remember. These same points apply to ALL PE activities and we use them often, but when we get into sport specific skills (instead of general fitness or non-traditional game play), these definitely come into “play”:
There are all kinds of students with different levels of experience with <insert the topic, skill, or sport here… for this month it’s basketball> in this gym.
There are students who love basketball and have a lot of experience with it and perhaps play on a team outside of school.
There are students who love or like basketball and have experience with it in school on the playground and perhaps in their neighborhood, but haven’t played on an organized team.
There are students who have little to no experience with basketball whatsoever.
There are students who have discovered that they don’t really seem to like basketball.
ALL of those levels are acceptable in the gym… because PE is for ALL. Yes, we have to cover and complete the work on the “material”, but how you treat each other during that time will directly affect how enjoyable or unenjoyable the experience is for everyone. Keep this in mind as you are working in partnerships, small groups, or teams!
