HCOC Children's Church
October Week 4
Can't Scare Me ~ God is our Protector
Be a Light
The children colored a picture that reminded them that we need to be God's light. We added a little flare by gluing colored tissue paper above the flashlight to be our light.
All Hallow's Eve
Time for a short history lesson! We learned that Halloween was originally celebrated in May and that it was a holiday to remember all of God's people who died for Him. The holiday was eventually moved to October to dissuade people from participating in the pagan holiday Samhain, but the two holidays mixed over time (References: http://christianity.about.com/od/holidaytips/i/biblehalloween.htm, http://www.allaboutgod.com/history-of-halloween-christian-perspective-faq.htm and KSBJ Sunday Talk). We also talked about ways that we can use Halloween for God. One very cool way to do it is to pray for the group of people or situation represented by your child's costume. Superheroes = cops, firemen, etc. Dorothy from Wizard of Oz = children who are lost from their home and so on!
Bible Memory + Stomp those fears!
Isaiah 41:13 "I am the Lord your God, who holds your right hand. And I tell you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I will help you.'" We went over our Bible verse with some motions and then played a game in the dark with our flashlights. As the child who was "it" found someone, that person turned on their flashlight until we had a room full of lights to symbolize how our lights cause others to shine, too!
