1st Grade
First grade took the math benchmark test on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. We have been busy completing our reading, phonics and writing assessments. Please continue to read every night with your child. Buddy Fun Day was a blast! We enjoyed spending time with our buddy!
2nd Grade
This week flew by!! We took our End of Year reading, writing, and math assessments. We had a great time celebrating all of our hard work with Buddy Fun Day! We also had a great time on our field trip to the Environmental Studies Center. We learned a lot about living things and how to keep our planet safe.
3rd Grade
Wow what an amazing week! Our trip to the Dallas Zoo was fantastic! We saw all sorts of habitats and different animals. Not only did we have an awesome zoo trip but we had a great time celebrating the end of the year at Buddy Fun Day! We are so thankful for Ms. Taylor and Coach Davis for organizing a fantastic day and all of our wonderful volunteers. In addition to all the fun we also began learning about 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication. Can you solve 24x12?
4th Grade
What a great week in fourth grade! Buddy Fun Day was a blast, and we had fun and learned a lot about Texas on our Austin field trip. Next week, students will be working on their reading fair project. Ask your child which book they are reading for their project.
5th Grade
In ELAR this week students are working on a poetry portfolio that they will be able to take with them to use as a reference in the future. We are also reading the book The View from Saturday together to continue learning and identifying the elements of fiction. In social studies, we are comparing and contrasting the British Colonies.
6th Grade
Parents, did you know that your child is an awesome teacher to little kids? S/he buddy read with younger children and it was just heart-warming to watch. Graduation is upon us! The 6th grade ceremony will be on May 31 at 8:30 a.m. in our cafeteria. Following a brief reception, your child will be dismissed for the day. Look for the information note in your child’s folder. We can’t wait to celebrate with you.
When Will I Know How My Child Did On STAAR?
Students across RISD and the state are taking their state STAAR tests this month. Parents will receive letters with results, in a timeframe dependent on the type of test.
Grades 3-8: A letter will be sent home to parents with results in July. Letters will include information that will allow parents to view their child’s Confidential Student Report (CSR) through the Texas Assessment Management Systems (TAMS) website, estimated to be ready in mid-July. CSRs will also be added to RISD’s Focus software when available from the state, allowing parents to view reports through a Focus parent account. Hard copies of the CSR will be available for parents to pick up from their child’s school in August.
Grades 5 & 8 Reading and Math Only: Parents received a letter last month with their child's results. Results for students who re-tested this week will be sent home to parents by the end of the school year, along with grade placement committee and summer school information. STAAR EOCs: A letter will be sent home to parents with results and cumulative EOC performance history in late May. Letters will include information that will allow parents to view their child’s Confidential Student Report through the TAMS website, estimated to be ready in mid-June. CSRs will also be added to RISD’s Focus software when available from the state, allowing parents to view it through a Focus parent account. Hard copies of the CSR will be available for parents to pick up from their child’s school in August.

Special Areas
Art
We have had fun making bracelets, keychains and visors for Buddy Fun Day. These are fun activities that calm children much better than fidget spinners and help develop brain power and fine motor skills. The plastic lanyard lacing is cheaper than fidget spinners too. You can find it at the dollar store, discount stores and craft stores. Hobby Lobby has free instruction sheets. So get some craft supplies for stress relieving and brain development over the summer. This weekend go see our SIX winners at the WildFlower Arts Festival at the Eisemann Arts Center. There will be music, art, food and fun.
ESOL
All our kids had fun with their friends participating in the Buddy Fun Day event.
Kindergarteners were busy with their EOY Reading assessment and groups of animals, while our first graders took assessments in reading, phonics, and writing. Second graders took the same assessments in addition to their math test. Third graders had a great field trip at the zoo, while fourth graders went to Austin to learn all about our capital.Fifth graders worked on their poetry portfolio, and sixth graders are getting ready for their graduation next week.
Library
All library books were due today. If your child still has a library book checked out to you will receive a notice on Tuesday, May 23. Please make sure you work with your child to find and return this book to the library as soon as possible. This week I also talked to the students about how they can access books while the school library is closed. Each student received a flyer this week with information about e-books and audiobook apps Overdrive and Destiney Discover as well as information about the public library. If your child brings proof that he or she went to an area public library , such as a library card, a book checked out from the public library or even a flyer from the library with the library’s name on the flyer, I will give them a prize out of my prize box.
Music
We had a blast skating with choir, ensemble and stomp members on Tuesday but the fun isn’t over yet! Next week we have the talent show and the rotary club field trip! The talent show dress rehearsal is on Monday from 3:00-4:00pm in the cafeteria. Performers need to bring their outfits for the show to change into and practice after school. Tuesday, May 23rd is the big day of the show! All talent show participants will come to school dressed for the show and we will do a school performance that afternoon and an evening performance at 6:00pm. The rotary club field trip is Wednesday, May 24th during the day and all choir and ensemble members will need to come to school in jeans and their choir/ensemble shirt.
PACE
Get your best two step ready because the kids in PACE are! This week we will be learning about dancing and the science behind it all, from the eight count to getting footloose.
Physical Education
In PE we are ALL getting ready for FRE BFD (Buddy Fun Day)! All the grade levels are being introduced to our games, our student helpers and leaders have been volunteered and been assigned, and the excitement is building, building, building!!!
