TCI Coaches Training

In addition to introductory and refresher PD, TCI Coaches PD offers in-depth training for experienced TCI users.


Are you looking to deepen your teaching practices around TCI's active learning approach? Do you want to share and guide other CCS teachers in TCI implementation? We have the program for you! One of the next steps in our TCI implementation is to provide an opportunity for CCS teachers to become experts in the TCI approach. We are excited to begin TCI Coaches Training this summer with three half-day sessions and continue into the 2022-2023 school year. This cohort of teachers will have opportunities for social studies leadership in 2022-2023.

Apply for a Teachers' Dream Grant - Deadline Extended

Multiple grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 will be available to all Columbus City Schools teachers to assist in their attempts to improve teaching and learning. The grants give teachers an opportunity to develop meaningful, creative, and innovative experiences for their students along with financial support. The purpose of this grant is to support teachers in their efforts to be change agents for themselves and their students. Projects that lead to transformative action that addresses injustices in our society will receive priority.


The application deadline has been extended to May 8.

Kids Voting Civic Leaders Summer Program

Kids Voting Ohio is excited to announce the Civic Leaders Summer Program!


The Civic Leaders Summer Program provides high-school students with a unique opportunity to earn 10+ service hours this summer. Participating students will collaborate with Kids Voting Ohio to create and implement civic projects that will bring change to their communities.


The free summer program includes an informational session followed with bi-weekly workshops during the months of June and July. Students will implement their civics project during the 2022-23 school year. The information session will be held via zoom on May 24th at 5:30pm. Registration can be found here.

Junior Achievement Career Adventures for Grade 6

The JA Career Adventures encourage students to determine WHO they want to be before they can figure out WHAT they want to be! Students are encouraged to “be open to exploring ALL OF THE THINGS that make you so fantastically, extraordinarily YOU!”


There is no cost to participate in this program. The program was released in November and available, per each teacher's schedule, until mid-June.


Our philosophy is that we can only teach kids who want to be taught so the Adventures are intentionally fun, engaging, colorful, surprising, positive and easy-to-read. Based on teacher feedback from last year, the JA Career Adventures also includes voice-over narration for students who may struggle reading.
  • Students use a Venn Diagram as they discover their Personality, Skills, Interests and Values. The intersection of those four circles is their Happy Place: a successful rewarding career
  • Students navigate ten lessons about Career Readiness and Financial Literacy, then participate in a Holland Codes Interests Survey. Based on the results of the survey, students are directed to investigate Career Clusters
  • Students see how their education affects their career which affects their lifestyle
  • Program includes vocabulary words, quizzes, scavenger hunts, videos, stickers, GIFs, Fun Facts and Things You Can Do Now suggestions!

EXTERNAL SUMMER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Ohio Teacher Leadership Summit, June 8, 2022

The 2022 Ohio Teacher Leadership Summit will take place on June 8 at the Ohio Union on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus.


Professional learning will be delivered by educators from across the state, in partnership with the Ohio Department of Education. The purpose of the Summit is to bring together educators from schools, districts and organizations doing innovative work to develop teacher leaders and to share their successes, lessons learned, and strategies for overcoming challenges around teacher leadership implementation. The Summit offers an opportunity to become engaged with a statewide network of teacher leaders and administrators to promote and strengthen teacher leadership in Ohio.

We the People Summer Institute, June 26-30, 2022

Join the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education for a free five-day summer social studies institute!


What

Using the critically acclaimed We the People program, OCLRE’S Summer Institute provides participants with the tools needed to implement an inquiry-centered program aligned with Ohio learning standards for grade 8 social studies and high school American government. Attendees will gain applicable teaching strategies and proficiency in using primary sources in lesson plans.


The institute prepares attendees to effectively teach:

  • The Constitution and Bill of Rights
  • The Declaration of Independence
  • Other primary source documents in American history and government


When and Where

The institute will take place June 26-30 in Washington D.C. Each day will include scholarly lectures, presentations from OCLRE staff on teaching strategies, and small-group discussions with trained We the People mentors. The institute will conclude with teachers participating in the capstone of the We the People program-simulated legislative hearings that serve as an authentic assessment for students.


Registration Details

Registration is free! First time attendees will receive a scholarship and stipend covering expenses, ongoing support, and a free classroom set of We the People textbooks.


In order to receive the scholarship and stipend, registrants must:

  • Commit to attending the institute
  • Participate in the hearings on the final day of the institute
  • Attend a one-day follow-up meeting in the fall
  • Hold a hearing in their classrooms by the end of the 2022-2023 school year

Non-Traditional Texts for Social Studies Instruction

OSU is again holding a Virtual Summer Institute with limited space available to CCS educators at no charge as long as funding is still available when you officially register with the purchase order code. Online workshop options include topics on meeting mental health needs of K-12 students, educator wellness and burnout, overcoming systemic racism in schools, literacy, teaching for equity and social justice and technology as a learning tool.

  • Upon pre-registering, we will then send you the purchase order code via email. You will then need to enroll yourself in the course using the purchase order code.
  • Workshops will fill on a first come first served basis. Space is limited/funding is limited. Even if you have the purchase order code, you might still not make it into the course as teachers from several districts will also be registering.
  • Credits: Participants will receive documentation for the successful completion of their workshops. No university credit will be earned as the workshops are based on OSU continuing education credits. Contact hours, listed as credit hours on the Summer Institute website, are defined as time spent under scheduled instruction, which can be synchronous or asynchronous. Documentation of completion of the workshops may be submitted to the LPDC Committee for CEUs. Click HERE for directions on how to request CEUs upon completion of your workshop(s).
  • If you make it into a course(s) via the CCS pre-registration process, please attend the workshop(s) as you will be taking a seat and CCS will be funding your seat. If you find you are unable to attend, please let me know immediately so we may offer the spot to one of your colleagues.

Teaching Black History Conference, July 22-24, 2022

The Teaching Black History conference is the signature program of the Center for K–12 Black History and Racial Literacy Education at the University of Buffalo. Each year, the conference convenes hundreds of teachers to learn the best curricular and instructional practices surrounding Black history education. We will have featured speakers and entertainment, but the stars of the conference are our teachers. Each conference session is led by a classroom teacher who shares their Black history strategies. The sessions are interactive, so participants will have hands-on experiences to bring to their classrooms.


Conference attendees love Black history. We welcome community educators, parents, school-aged students, librarians, museum curators and anyone who loves to learn about Black history. The conference can be held face to face, virtually, or in a hybrid format. This year's theme is Mother Africa.
