South Elementary Mustangs
Monthly Newsletter South Elementary October 2021-22
Message from the Principal
Dear Families of South Elementary Mustangs,
Welcome to the month of October! We are eight weeks into the school year and we are so grateful for these first two months of school and our ability to sustain in-person learning in a safe environment for our students and staff members. Thank you so much for your patience, flexibility, and support thus far in the school year. We are doing our best each and every day to live our vision of MUSTANG P.R.I.D.E. and FUTURE READY at South in all we do and say.
This month we will be holding our Fall Semester Teacher-Family Connection week Monday, October 11th - Friday, October 15th. Please make every effort to connect with your student’s teacher(s) in order to build our partnerships between school and home to support our students in every way possible.
We are in our second year of AVID Elementary Implementation at South Elementary and experiencing great success with the implementation. AVID Elementary is a schoolwide program that focuses on the strategies necessary for students to develop in order to fully prepare for a successful future and helps our students to become FUTURE READY! We are using AVID’s guiding structure of WICOR (Writing - Inquiry - Collaboration - Organization - Reading) to help us develop our next step each year as we work to continue to improve our learning environment and our learning experiences at South. Last year our focus was Organization and this year our focus is Collaboration. Please ask your student what new collaboration and/or teamwork learning activities they are participating in at school! We’re planning to hold an AVID Parent Informational Meeting in November that everyone is invited to attend.
Thank you for your continued support in working with us to support the learning and growth of your student(s). We look forward to connecting with you this month during our Teacher-Family Connection week.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kristen Puzio
Principal, South Elementary

Atentamente,
Sra. Kristen Puzio

Counselor's Corner
We will be giving the Social Emotional Assessment to all students starting October 18th through November 12th. This is a series of age-appropriate social emotional questions that will give us direct information to assist in determining the skills students have already acquired and the skills which they still need, based on the skills that should be developed or mastered at each grade level. Please call me with questions or concerns.
South Elementary Students continue to practice mindfulness every day to help with self-regulation. Mindfulness has been researched and proven in numerous studies to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and increase focus and attention. Please help your South student practice mindfulness while at home by following my youtube channel.
Halloween is coming! South Elementary School has been collecting slightly used Halloween Costumes, so that we can make sure every single South student gets to dress up and experience this magical holiday if they wish to do so! Please reach out to me if your South student would like one of our donated costumes. They are all slightly used, but very loved!
As always, please feel free to reach out to me if you feel as though your child could benefit from one on one counseling, or some type of social emotional group: Changing families divorce, anger management, peer relationships and social skills, self-esteem, assertiveness, managing stress and anxiety, etc.

27J Schools Celebrate National School Lunch Week
To recognize the National School Lunch Program, serving nearly 30 million children each day, 27J Schools will celebrate National School Lunch Week from October 12-15, 2021. The fun and creative campaign theme, “WILD About School Lunch” highlights the importance of a healthy school lunch to a student’s success both in and out of the classroom. Recent research shows children are getting their healthiest meals at school. National School Lunch Week will highlight the nutritious foods available daily at our district schools. “School lunches offer students fruits and vegetables, whole grains and milk, and meet federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium,” said Tony Jorstad, 27J Schools Nutrition Services Director. “Thanks to pandemic waivers, school meals are free for all students this school year, so it’s a great time to give school lunch a try. National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the wonderful benefits of our lunch program.” Join us for lunch October 12th-15th!
