Second Step
Here at Manavon, we want your child to be successful in school and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, children also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others.
This Thursday, September 8, we’ll begin Second Step® Elementary, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve children’s social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school.
Four units will cover the following:
- Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
- Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion management strategies—including stress management for older students—to calm strong feelings.
- Empathy & Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others’ perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.
- Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:
S: Say the problem
T: Think of solutions
E: Explore the outcomes
P: Pick a solution
You’ll receive weekly communications from me to help you reinforce Second Step language, skills, and goals at home. If you have any questions about Second Step Elementary, please don’t hesitate to contact me for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community!
During this unit your child(ren) will be working on: Click the Grade Level Below!
This week, chat with your child(ren) about:
- Grade 2: How to Get Good at Something- In this week’s lesson, your child will learn that their best skills have developed as a result of practicing, trying hard, and asking for help. Try This at Home - Ask your child to share with you what they’re good at and how they became good at it. Share with them something you’re good at and what you did to practice and try hard, and who you asked for help.
- Grade 3: Changing Your Brain- In this week’s lesson, your child will learn that when they learn something new, the brain changes as different parts of the brain begin to send messages to each other. Try This at Home - Ask your child to explain what happens in their brain when they learn something for the first time.
- Grade 4: Setting a Good Goal - In this week’s lesson, your child’s class will work together to set a 2-week goal that’s specific, challenging, and doable. Try This at Home - Ask your child to describe their class goal and explain what makes it challenging and doable for their class. Tell your child about a goal you recently set and what makes it challenging and doable for you.
- Grade 5: The Right Goal for Me - In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to set a goal that's right for them. A goal that's right for someone is specific, challenging, doable, and motivating. Try This at Home - Ask your child what their goal is and how they know it’s right for them. Encourage them to describe why it’s motivating to them. Talk to your child about a goal you reached in the past and why you chose that goal.
Peachjar is Here!
Digital flyer delivery starts August 31!
Flyers from your school, district and approved community organizations will be sent digitally through Peachjar. You can expect to receive these flyers as images in your inbox where you can easily click to take action.
As a reminder, no action is required if your correct email address is on file with the district. On August 31 you’ll receive a welcome email from Peachjar.
In order to ensure delivery of these notifications, please confirm that your email address is on file with the school district and add school@peachjar.com to your email contacts. We look forward to providing families with important updates through this new communication tool!
Remind App
We will be using Remind again this year!
Beginning the week of September 5, all communication will go through Remind only. Download the app today!
You have an important role in communicating with your child's teacher. Remember that during the school day, teachers are working with students and are directed to limit their communication so that they can teach. If your child's teacher does not respond immediately, trust that they will respond within 24 hours.
In addition, our teachers have families too! Evenings are spent much like yours, and I have asked the teachers to take this time with their families and catch up on communication the next day.
First Home and School Meeting
There will be a babysitter and a raffle! See you there!
