FHS Working Towards Returning Students to School
Yellow Plan –
Frankfort Independent is continuing to diligently work towards the return of all students to in-person instruction who wish to participate.
The next steps for Frankfort High is phase two of our phase in plan which allows for the return of Freshmen to the building. After following the most recent data coming in and receiving guidance from the Board of Education we will continue with the previously set date for return: Monday, November 9th.
On this date all freshmen who have elected to return in person will do so. In-person students will need to be at school by 8:00 AM to begin class. Students who will be virtual will continue to log into their classes virtually following the new Freshmen Schedule. Specific information for each group will follow. All upperclassmen will still follow the regular virtual schedule until their return.
Reporting positive COVID-19 Students
Homecoming King John McDonald and Queen Bri Walker
This year's 2020 Football Homecoming King and Queen are John McDonald and Bri Walker. These two seniors along with the other homecoming court members were individually recorded and photographed so the HOCO2020 ceremony could be completely virtual and safe within the COVID guidelines.
Students participated all week in a different, (hopefully once in a lifetime) virtual Homecoming Week. The Pep Rally Friday went on like it traditionally does. The difference? It was on a Google Meet with the student body logging on, watching videos of Cheers, participating from home in Minute to Win It competitions, watching interviews of Coach Foley and football players and cheer competitions between the FHS Houses.
The Homecoming Dance was Virtual as well. Some students dressed up and kept their computer cameras on while the danced along to music and videos. Others watched the happenings comfy on the couches. They were treated to special appearances like FHS Alumni wishing them well and videos of various dances. Students laughed, chatted, dance and had a great time. The Homecoming King and Queen were announced.
The PEP club officers were pleased with how the week turned out. Ella Abney said, " Even during a pandemic, the community of Frankfort High was united in a safe, but fun way! I think the pep rallies, dace and dress up days really lifted the spirits of Panther Nation! I'm proud of everyon who helped make it happen!"

Parent Summit Tip of the Week
This week progress reports are being mailed home. There is still time for these grades to change before the end of the semester, these reports are designed to give you an idea of where your student is now. If you have questions or concerns, your child's mentor is a great person to reach out to.
Rise Mentors are meeting once a week with each of their mentees in order to track progress in classes, celebrate accomplishments, and help make plans for improvement. They are also helping set goals and should be communicating that progress to you weekly. Our mentoring program is designed to provide students with another layer of support and accountability.
It should also be a resource for you, and your first step with anything you need from the high school. This week would be a good time to continue that communication or reconnect with any questions.
Ask your child how their Mentor Meetings are going and check to make sure they are doing their part and showing up for the scheduled one-on-one meetings.

NOSSI College of Art
Nossi College of Arts has sent information to be shared with all students thinking about going to college for the Arts. Gregory Havens sent this to our students.
I wanted to remind you about Nossi College of Art as a college option for your creative students. Nossi is fully accredited and offers 4 year degrees in Illustration, Graphic Design, Photography and Video/Film. We also have a 2 year certificate in Culinary Arts. Many schools offer some creative options but at Nossi we specialize in them. The entire campus was designed and built from the ground up around these careers. We combine state of the art studios with current working professionals in their field. This produces graduates that companies want to hire. We never charge out of state fees, offer multiple scholarships and match KEES money dollar for dollar.
I wanted to share a few things going on at Nossi College of Art. One of the creative periodicals " Animation Career Review Magazine" has released new 2020 numbers. Nossi's Illustration program was ranked # 1 in Tennessee and # 3 in the Southeast. I have attached web info if you would like to check it out.
On Saturday, November 21, we will be hosting our bi-annual College Preview Day. This is a Senior only open house. Students must pre-register and that can be done online at nossi.edu. There are no fees and it is a great way for students considering a creative degree to check out Nossi. Participation will be limited this year due to Covid.
Sincerely,
Gregory Havens

KDE Seeking Nominations for 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is seeking nominations for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. This is not a scholarship; however, all scholars will be honored for their accomplishments during the National Recognition Program, held in June in Washington, D.C. Presidential Scholars will be guests of the commissioner of the U.S. Department of Education during the National Recognition Program and enjoy an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to meet with government officials, educators and other accomplished people. To commemorate their achievement, the Scholars are awarded the U.S. Presidential Scholars medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House
.
Each school may nominate two high school seniors: one male and one female. We encourage you to nominate students who, while demonstrating outstanding scholarship, might not otherwise be nominated through the current ACT/SAT or arts recognition processes. For the arts component, students must participate in the National YoungArts program. In addition to the general nominations, we also are asking each of you to nominate additional students from your jurisdiction to be included as candidates for excellence in Career and Technical Education (CTE).
It may be helpful to consider the following questions:
- What about the student makes him or her stand out as having outstanding scholarship?
- What special challenges or hurdles has this student overcome while still achieving success in academics, technical education or in the arts?
Students who apply should complete the first page of the attached application form. The second page must be completed by a counselor or teacher who is most familiar with the student. Please email the completed application for the male and female candidate from your school to Kathie Anderson at Kathie.Anderson@education.ky.gov. KDE will select 25 students for the 2021 application and submit these to the national selection committee who will determine Presidential Scholar winners.
Please email completed applications to Kathie Anderson at kathie.anderson@education.ky.gov by Oct. 30, 2020.
