LESSON OBJECTIVES
Communicating objectives to students is a critical part of every lesson. Students need to know what you, as the teacher, are trying to accomplish so students can be active participants in the learning process. If you don't clearly communicate your objectives, the lesson is happening to the students, rather than the students taking ownership of it themselves.
Objectives can be communicated effectively even if they haven't been posted, however, it is still best practice to post your objectives visibly in the classroom if you are able. This is not for the sake of compliance, but because students need it! Many students need repeated reminders or visual cues to support their learning. This means the objective should not only be posted, but posted in such a way that students can read it. If the objective is posted on the board in a font that is too small to read, for example, it probably doesn't help most students. However, posting the objectives alone does not mean students will know it and understand it. Be sure to talk about the objectives at the beginning and throughout the lesson. It is only if the students know and understand the purpose of the lesson that the objective is actually lived.

PANORAMA SURVEY
In order to learn more about student and family experiences in Framingham, we will again be partnering with Panorama Education again this year to conduct surveys on school climate and social emotional learning. As part of the district’s approach to social emotional learning at the elementary level, we will be administering surveys to students in grades 3-5 in January 2020. As in previous years, the district will also be administering surveys to staff, families and students in grades 3-12 later in the Spring 2020.
Survey Administration Details:
When: Please plan on administering the 15-20 minute long student survey at a convenient time between January 13, 2020 through February 7, 2020.
How: Students will take the survey online on Panorama Education’s secure website surveys.panoramaed.com/framingham. Each student will need access to an internet-connected device to take the survey. Students will use their 6 digit student LASID number as their access code. The surveys are available online in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Please visit the Framingham Panorama Site for additional resources to facilitate the survey administration, including the following:

FROM FOOD SERVICES
HERE is a copy of the updated school lunch photos that help students, especially those who do not speak English as a first language, understand what is being served for lunch. As you know, the more accurate the students order meals, the faster the lines flow, and ensures everyone gets what they ordered without food waste. It is helpful to use when tallying meal counts to help students pick their meal choice?
Additionally, field trip orders must be ordered 2 weeks before to ensure we have proper supplies on hand. Classes must take cooler with ice sheets on the bus or other vehicle to ensure meals stay cold and no one gets sick. Cafe manager needs names of students when they pick up the cooler the day of the trip. HERE is the field trip meal request form.

FAMILY LITERACY & MATH NIGHT
Family Literacy Night: Classroom visits
On Thursday January 16, students will have a chance to show their families their writing. Please plan to leave at least one piece of students' writing out on the 16th in your classrooms. You can leave a students' entire writing folders or just one piece that they want to share. In the upper grades, students can share their writing on the chromebooks. I will make sure to tell parents that they are ONLY looking at their children's writing - so they should not be pulling out other folders and/or work.
We will have teachers supervising in the classrooms to make sure the students and parents only look at the writing. If you do not want parents and students in your class, please give me a collection of your students' writing (one piece/student) in alphabetical order by first name. I will let the students show their parents in the library and then recollect the writing.
Please let me know if you have any questions! Thank you!

REPORT CARDS
The report card window is officially open. The window will close at the end of the day on January 30th, 2020. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, January 31st, 2020. This link provides resources including blank report cards, a gradebook tutorial and instructions for printing reports for a select group.
As a reminder, if you have any student concerns with academics or behavior, report cards and progress reports should not be the first time parents are hearing about them.
Also, please remember that any student who requires translation in either Spanish or Portuguese MUST HAVE their report cards and comments sent home in their native language. Please use this LINK to access the elementary report card comments bank. There are translations in Spanish and Portuguese.
Additional questions have been asked about newcomers and how to complete grading for report cards. All students need to be taught the same district, standards based curriculum and all of our students are able to interact with and master grade-level standards.
There may be students that need different entry points into the grade level standards and ways of demonstrating mastery will vary depending on our students' educational backgrounds, experiences and language proficiency level.
On the report card, the classroom teachers should specify the student's progress to or mastery of the grade-level standards. Jaimie Dobson is available to sit with any staff to help with grading. Thank you!
