The Chestnut Square Post

June 2015

The Month in Review

May was a flurry of activity at Chestnut Square! Our famous Farmers Market is in full swing and takes place every Saturday. The market is generally open rain or shine, but due to the unusually heavy rainfall recently, we were forced to cancel the market on Saturday, May 30th. We're expecting beautiful weather going forward, so come out to see the wide variety of products offered, chat with friendly vendors, and listen to great music!

Our Education department finished off this school year with several Civil War on-site presentations at area schools. We also hosted almost two hundred students, teachers, and parents this month. We're in the final stages of preparing for this summer's Prairie Adventure Camps! Several camp sessions are almost sold out, so if your child wants to experience the most unique day camp in DFW, register today!

Despite the threat of rain, the Farm to Table Dinner was a resounding success. If you missed this year, we hope you will plan to join us next year! As a 501(c)(3) organization, the proceeds from fundraisers such as this support our programs. We appreciate all of our donors for their contributions in making this event such a special evening.

Ice cream junkies, connoisseurs, and fanatics: Saturday, June 13 is the 20th Annual Killis Melton Ice Cream Crank-Off! Get your tickets online and avoid the lines!

There is always something happening at Chestnut Square! It's so much fun, it's HISTORIC!

Volunteer Spotlight

Pat Rodgers

My journey began with Chestnut Square in 2006 when an eager volunteer knocked on the door of our newly restored 1910 Arts and Craft home in the historical district of McKinney. Her objective was to convince my husband Charles and me to have our home on the annual Christmas Home Tour sponsored by Chestnut Square, and she accomplished her goal. My husband, Charles, and I became involved in many of the events held each year. I was asked to serve the Board as Board Chair in 2011-12 and filled that position through 2014. My favorite volunteer opportunities have been in developing the trolley tour through historical McKinney...(continued)

Chester's Corner

Chestnut Square's mascot, Chester, would like to share his wish list with you! Your favorite feline is hoping for some craft supplies for his friends at Prairie Adventure Camp! He loves to watch the campers "live history" like the pioneer kids of the 1880s and he knows that we are a 501 (c)(3) organization, so we depend on your support! Items needed are:
  • large two-hole buttons
  • adia cloth
  • upholstery tacks
  • batting (pillow fluff)
  • pieces of craft wood
  • self-drying molding clay
  • felt roving

Thank you for your generosity!
