ESC REGION 11 STETHOSCOPE
The Ears Of The School Nurse
January 2023
Welcome back. 😃 We hope you had a relaxed and enjoyable break. It is time to refocus and finish the 22-23 school year.
"We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws but for potential." — Ellen Goodman
This quote stood out to me because we can learn something daily or weekly. We are nurses — there is progress made in the medical field daily. Telemedicine has been exploding and becoming the norm in the last few years. It is now implemented in schools and thriving!
I know change is hard and scary, but we can help improve lives, get students seen and treated quickly, and run a more functioning clinic, which makes you more productive and less tired at the end of the day.
I am so proud of all the districts and their daily strive to improve. Let's finish out this year with a bang and do great things!
As always, let your nurses at ESC Region 11 know if you need anything. We are here to support you!
Some good news, our grant has been extended through March of 2024! We will be able to support you a little longer than expected. 💜

Naloxone Facts
- Naloxone saves lives. It can help people who are overdosing on opioids. Sometimes other drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamine, are laced or mixed with fentanyl. Naloxone can temporarily reverse the effects of opioids.
- Two ways to give naloxone/Narcan. Nasal spray or injection into the muscle or skin.
- Naloxone/Narcan will not harm someone if they are not overdosing on an opioid. It is better to give and not need it than risk an overdose.
- Naloxone/Narcan is an essential step in saving someone's life that is overdosing.
- If naloxone is readily available, you can potentially save a life.

Emergency Response Teams (ERT)
Do you have your ERT plan and people in the appropriate role?
Texas Education Code 37.108 states, "school districts are required to adopt and implement a multi-hazard emergency operation plan for use in district facilities."
Did any see what happened to Damar Hamlin during the Bills and Bengals game? Sudden cardiac arrest. Luckily the NFL has an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) that was activated, and resources were deployed and started. What happened on that field has happened worldwide during games like football, baseball, soccer, volleyball, etc. Do not let your school be without a plan, and practice that plan. As the saying goes, "practice makes perfect."
