Integrating Writing
4th and 5th grade
Three types Of Common Core Standards
- Weakest areas tend to be 4.W.1b- provide reasons that are supported by facts and details and 4.W.3d- use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely
If teaching explicitly- build upon skills and assess formatively
Teacher models, students pair pre-write and share out to class, individuals write and model to class (sharing out) then assess (formative).
Start with an introductionTeacher models, students pair-write and share out to class, individuals write and model to class, peer edit then assess (formative)
Gather information/ research and take notes
Teacher models how to take notes, students take notes together, split to individual notes, then formatively assess the note-taking process (may have to integrate how you want research done and specific sources)
Begin drafting supporting paragraphs-
Same process as above- don't forget to peer edit- again assess formatively
Draft conclusion
Same process as above- don't forget to peer edit- again assess formatively
Then- editing grammar, mechanics and punctuation, transitional phrases
Peer editing resources
For example, only peer edit small chunks at a time- not the whole paper
1. Highlight the topic sentence (on paper or a Google doc) in yellow
Do you understand your partner's topic? Check yes or no
If yes- write their topic on the line below:
2. Highlight the reason (if doing opinion writing) in blue
Does your partner's reason make sense to you? Check yes or no
If yes, write their reason on the line below:
3. Circle the transitional words in your partner's paper. How many does he or she have?
Integrating into playlists for 4th
- Math: Written reflections for formative assessment. This allows them to use vocabulary. Model first: "I am having trouble coming up with a common denominator when adding fractions."
- Math: Pink playlist- add a section "I am ready to move on to yellow because..."
- Reading- Pink Playlist for POV and Fact and Opinion-First Provide a model/ example of what the answer needs to look like then the assignment: choose one fact you found interesting and tell me why (you will get surface level answers at first- then ask why again). Same process for yellow- choose two facts and explain why, green choose three and explain why and research one (provide QR code link to a safe site) and list a new fact from your research, same for blue- choose three facts- research two- list new facts from research and maybe reflect on the topic "So why is this important to know?"
- CS POV video- blue playlist- Students do a written reflection on the process- What went well? What were some obstacles and how would you change the process if you could?
- Science IS yellow- Provide an example for students. Then, the assignment- write two smilies about the phases of the moon. Share out creative similes and celebrate.
- First and Secondhand accounts green playlist- find and additional secondhand account and have students write their own firsthand account- could approach as RAFT writing.
Integrating writing 5th grade playlists
- Science- Genetics pink playlist- already has a RAFT assignment, blue playlist has a story but could change to a non-fiction article and get students to respond to the article- identify the author's point and do agree/ disagree and why? Use examples from the text to support your answer. See article: Genetics Provide a model or outline for the answer.
- ELA- yellow playlist for Inferences- has opinion writing already. Suggestions: provide a model or example to look at. Then have students give three reasons. Possibly use to springboard into choose one reason and provide an example. Provide a model or an example.
- ELA- green playlist- Compare and contrast- Independent writing station-"My favorite sport" would change explanation into examples. Were you going to have students then compare their favorite sports with one another? Add the requirement of including figurative language since it's under that unit.
- Math- Division as a fraction- has a journal assignment already and students are expected to write in complete sentences! See resources for open-ended math questions.
