The Moon Affects the Oceans Tides
By: Katelyn Merrill
What are tides?
Have you heard of the saying, "The ebb and flow of life?" Rises and falls in the water are called the tides. When the water is rising, we say the tide is flowing. When it is falling we say the tide is ebbing.
How does gravity work?
Gravity pulls the moon and Earth to each other and keeps the moon moving around the Earth. It seem like the Earth and moon are in a tug-of-war over the ocean water. (Pearson 4th Grade Science Textbook)
What is high and low tide?
Tides have a major change twice a day. The way the moon's gravity pulls on the Earth makes tides. Every 12 hour or so, the seawater rises up the shoreline. This is high tide. It is low tide when it falls back again revealing more shore. (www.tide-forecast.com)
When did people become curious about tides?
Hundreds of year ago, people found out that moon causes tides. People saw that two high tides and two low tides move onto an ocean shore each day. They also saw that the moon seems to rise and set each day. That led to scientific research. (Pearson 4th Grade Science Textbook)
Try an experiment to learn how tides occur!
YOU WILL NEED
Soccer or beach ball, glue, glue brush, glass, tinfoil, scissors, reusable adhesive, flashlight.

YOU WILL NEED
High and low tide: plastic bowl, water, plastic ball to represent the world.
The tidal bulge: strong glue, one 8in length and two 16in lengths of thin string, plastic ball to represent the world, plastic bowl, hand drill, water.
HIGH AND LOW TIDE
Place the bowl on a firm, flat surface, then half fill it with water. Place the ball gently in the water so that it floats in the middle of the bowl, as shown in the picture.

Ocean Tides
If we had no moon we would have no tides, and if we had no tides we would have none of the things we got from the beach like seashells, starfish, crabs, jellyfish, and beach glass.
