Winter Weather Ahead
While winter can be a season of fun and adventure for children, it can also be very dangerous. Before the temperature gets any lower, start thinking about warmer clothing options for your child for the upcoming chilly months. With the cold weather upon us, please remember to send your children to school with appropriate winter clothes such as a warm coat, hat, and mittens/gloves. Once the snow flies, snow pants and boots will be required for students to play in the snow during recess. Without them they will only be allowed to play on the blacktop areas. It is also a good idea to label all outdoor clothing with your child’s name so there is no confusion among the many different cold weather items.
For up to date information about school closings or delays due to the snowy weather you can use any of the following resources:

Absences & Tardies
If your child will be absent or late, please call our office at (515)242-8441 or email us at samuelson@dmschools.org by 9:00 AM in the morning of their tardy or absence. Students must be in their classroom at 8:45 or they will be counted tardy.
Excused Absences are defined as:
- Medical Appointment (please provide a doctor's note upon your child's return)
- Medical Injury
- Illness excused by parent/guardian
- Illness excused by health provider
- Other than medical/illness (Examples: religious holidays, court, death or illness in immediate family, other as approved by school administrator.)
- In-school suspension
- Out-of-school suspension
Unexcused Absences are defined as all other absences. Examples include, skipping school, babysitting, family vacations, gone without contact.
When a student reaches 10 days absent (excused and unexcused) a school may request, in writing that a parent provide medical excuses as documentation for further absences. If the student continues to be ill without medical verification, the absences will be considered unexcused.
Arrival/Dismissal Procedures
With the school year in full swing, we want to remind you of our arrival and dismissal procedures. Our procedure helps keep your children safe. Please remind your children to cross at the designated crosswalks instead of in the middle of the street.
If you are dropping off your child in a car, please enter on Lindlavista Way. You can drop off along the sidewalk at the side of the school. The area in front of Samuelson, along Bel-Aire Road, is reserved for buses and day care vans only. Stay on the right side of the road as you drive along Bel-Aire. For the safety of your children and other drivers, do not make u-turns in front of the school. This will help traffic move as quickly and smoothly as possible.
If you are picking up your child in a car, enter on Lindlavista Way or Crestmoor Place. Stay in your car in the car line. The children will line up on the sidewalk at the side of the school. When it is your turn, a teacher will place your child (children) in your car. You may then pull forward or around as directed. You must turn right on Bel-Aire Road at dismissal time. The area in front of Samuelson, along Bel-Aire Road is reserved for buses and day care vans only.
Please do not park along Lindlavista Way. One lane must stay open on Lindlavista Way for the car line and emergency vehicles. If you need to park and leave your car, you may park on Bel Aire Road or Crestmoor Place. Be kind to our neighbors and do not block their driveways.
Please remember per the DMPS Parent Handbook, bike riders must be in 4th or 5th grade.
Schools for Rigor Update
As shared in last month's newsletter, we are continuing to revise and refine our work with student success criteria. We have been working on how students will provide evidence that they have a plan in place to demonstrate how they will use success criteria to show proficiency of the learning target. Students are responsible for monitoring their plan of implementation. After the student has completed a rubric that measures their level of understanding, they give their evidence to their partner so they partner can give their feedback.
