Tips for Parents for Talking with Kids about the Coronavirus (source: childmind.org)

  1. Don’t be afraid to discuss it! Not talking about it will often make them worry more. Your goal should be to help them feel informed and get more facts than they are likely to get from their friends.

  2. Consider your child’s age. Don’t give too much information. Just answer their questions as best you can.

  3. Ask your child what they have heard about coronavirus, and how they feel about it.

  4. Deal with your own anxiety about coronavirus. Make sure you are calm while you are discussing it.

  5. Be reassuring. The flu is actually much more common, and kids are less likely to contract coronavirus.

  6. Focus on what you’re doing to stay safe: Wash your hands often. Sneeze into your elbows. Avoid touching your face.

  7. Stick to your routine.

  8. Keep lines of communication open.

Read Across America: Kiss a Pig

Big picture
For Read Across America Week, Ms. Mullican and Mrs. Johnson challenged students to read 1,124 books over 4 days. Our amazing Bayyari students read 1,439 books! Because students met the reading challenge goal, Ms. Mullican and Mrs. Johnson kissed a pig. Several teachers also made goals for their classes and joined in on kissing the pig. For a video of the event, please check our Facebook feed. Thank you to all the parents who supported the students in reading each night at home, the students who participated and read each night, the teachers who challenged their students, and our partner, Mr. Parsons, of Farmland Adventures for bringing Bob, the pig, to get all the kisses.
