This week in third-grade...
Reading- Students continue their study of informational texts with a focus on narrative non-fiction in the form of biographies and autobiographies. This portion of our unit is an opportunity for our students to synthesize what they know about character traits, prediction, and questioning within a new genre.
Writing- We will begin integrating science, reading, and writing as we start our unit on informational writing about planets. Students will learn and apply writing skills that are applicable across academic content areas as they themselves become experts on a planet in our solar system. This is always a very popular unit and we are excited to get started!
Social Studies- In just a few short weeks we will begin one of our largest projects in third-grade. Students will be studying important historical figures from Asheville, some of whom you may not know! Students will then complete a week-long workshop in the art medium of their choice to create monuments and memorials for some of Asheville's hidden figures. This project will include a partnership with a local art activist, DeWayne Barton, a tour of some of Asheville's historically black spaces and places, and a final presentation of student work on April 11.

The Second SJL Parent & Community Workshop is THIS THURSDAY!
We hope to see you there!
Our SoConField Trip is This Friday!
It is helpful for everyone on the trip if students wear their Claxton t-shirts. A big block of blue and gold is easy to spot! We are grateful for Coach Swain for organizing this field trip for all Claxton third-graders every year!
Calling All Community Members!
As part of this project, we will also need some chaperones to accompany us on one of two field trips. Half of the third grade (Conti, Gregg, and Seimer) will go on the trip on Tuesday, March 26th and the rest will go on Thursday, March 28th (Arnst and McCarthy). You will need to have a recent background check on file with Claxton. You can complete this step at the Claxton website.
Please contact Betts Conti at annemarie.conti@acsgmail.net if you are interested in helping out.
