Building Better People Lesson. 2/22-2/26
In this day and age, we have come to realize the unfortunate reality of the continued existence of racism, bias, and prejudice in our world, country, and communities. However, when we hear the testimony of young people who have endured and have been victims of racism, it definitely gives us pause. Child actor, Lonnie Chavis (12) who plays young Randall Pearson in "This is Us" wrote an essay to his mom about his struggles with enduring racism. His essay has gone viral. This summer it was recently published in People Magazine. Lonnie has spoken about his message on LIVE with Kelly and Ryan. His essay is powerful as he implores all those reading his essay to be champions of change.
During this week, Bunker Hill Middle School Students will view a 14 minute video which high lights excerpts from this essay. After viewing the video, they will reflect on open ended questions about Lonnie and his experiences. Students will also be able to talk to administrators and counselors about their understanding of racism.
Students will do this activity in study halls for hybrid students. For those students at home we ask that they view the video even together with the family.
