Bobcat Bulletin May 23, 2022
Where the Wild Things Are
Hello Bobcat Families!
As May comes to an end, so does an unforgettable school year. I’m grateful for this community of students, staff, teachers, and families. The extraordinary commitment made by all stakeholders shows that we can continue to exceed expectations as a learning community and flourish in all that we do.
The end of this school year continues to be busy, right up until the end of May. We completed state standardized testing on May 17th, we look forward to our quarter 4 PBIS reward activity on May 27th, our Spring Music Concerts will be held on May 24th and 25th, and most importantly, I can’t wait to celebrate our 5th grade students at our Moving Up Ceremony on June 1st.
In addition to this, we are looking forward to welcoming Laurel Oak Elementary students on our campus, May 23rd. Laurel Oak student ambassadors have been working hard to help promote their “Cereal For Summer” campaign with their school community. We graciously accepted this invitation to witness “kids helping kids” as two communities come together to show kindness to one another.
I hope that you have had a chance this month to talk to your child about our Habit #7 Sharpen the Saw. Summer is the perfect time to Sharpen The Saw and focus on our physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual self.
Finally, I wish all our Bobcat families the very best for summer break and look forward to welcoming you back to campus in August, relaxed and refreshed for what promises to be a rewarding and productive school year.

Science Corner with Ms. Lopez
Greetings Bobcats!
The month of May is here and the countdown is on! Only a few more days left til’ the school year ends. As things come to a close, I want you to reflect on all the wonderful things you’ve learned in science. From that list, I want you to select one thing you loved the most. Now, I leave you with a challenge! Read below for more details about your science challenge:
· Create a really cool poster of one science topic you loved the most this year.
· On the back of the poster, write a short reason why you loved this topic.
· Make sure your poster has your first/last name and homeroom teacher’s name.
· Once you finish your poster, submit it to your homeroom teacher by May 27th
**On June 1st, I will be on the morning news to announce 3 winners from each grade level! **
Remember to be creative and have fun when making your science poster!
I look forward to seeing all the wonderful things you enjoyed learning in science this year!

HOW CAN YOU STAY MOTIVATED?
Here’s some tips on how to stay motivated so you can finish off the school year strong!
1. Participate in class: It’s important to try your best and put in some effort to participate and join class discussions. When you engage in the classroom, it helps you stay focused and interested in learning the material. Participating in class will also help in forming better relationships with your teachers and classmates! It also makes your learning experience that much better!!
2. Keep positive & practice positive self-talk: When you think positively, it will result in positive actions and outcomes. Try to surround yourself with positive people who support you and make you happy. Practicing positive self-talk will help with reducing any stress and anxiety!
3. Practice self-care: Make sure that you are getting enough sleep at night, engaging in healthy eating habits, and drinking enough water!
Keeping Fit: Try to include some physical activity in your everyday routine.
Most importantly, take care of yourself and do things that make you happy!!
MINDFULNESS MINUTE
You can do this exercise anywhere! If you are in class or at home and feeling frustrated, confused or stressed, try this exercise to bring your mind back to the present. All you need is your 5 senses to practice this exercise.
Sit in a comfortable spot, either on a chair or on the floor with legs crossed.
Notice 5 things that you can SEE. Look around you and pick something you don't normally notice like a color in the carpet or a crooked blind.
Notice 4 things that you can FEEL. Feel the coolness of the ground or the texture of your clothing.
Notice 3 things that you can HEAR. Listen closely to 3 things in the background like a bird chirping or a refrigerator humming.
Notice 2 things that you can SMELL. Maybe the fan is blowing a scent in from the kitchen or a window brings a scent in from outside.
Notice 1 thing that you can TASTE. Chew or sip something and notice the taste and temperature of it.
This mindfulness strategy can also be called a Grounding Technique, which means it brings us back to the present.
Try it today and share your results with your family or teacher!
Attendance Matters
We are incredibly proud of our attendance during that last few weeks of school! We are definitely finishing the year strong. Attendance for FSA is at all time high with just a handful of students who were absent in grades three through five. Thank you families for making attendance a priority throughout these last few weeks!
During the last few weeks, our Highest Average Daily Attendance award goes to 1st and 4th grade. We are so proud!
Our Most Improved Attendance Award goes to our 3rd graders who improved from 93% to 97%. Fantastic!
Please be sure to arrive by 7:45 am daily and pull up to the polls for your child to get out of the car.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
Sharpen the Saw means to have balance in your life. There is a story of a man who was sawing down a tree and not making a lot of progress. When a passerby asked him why he didn’t stop sawing to sharpen his saw, he remarked that he was too busy sawing. Habit 7 reminds us that we are more productive when we are in balance—body, brain, heart and soul. Just like the four tires on a car, if one area is being ignored or overused, the rest will feel the results. For young children, the car analogy is one they understand; a car could not go on fewer than all four tires. Explain the four parts of each person (body, brain, heart, and soul) and how important it is to take care of each part to make them all work better.
Sharpen the Saw at Home:
- Develop a Sharpen the Saw activity center in your home. Include arts-and-crafts supplies, learning games, puzzles, classical music, books, etc.
- Invite a family member to sit on a four-legged chair. Ask: “What would happen if one leg broke or fell off?” Identify the four basic human needs: body (physical), mind (mental), heart (emotional), spirit (spiritual). Discuss: Is our family sharpening the saw in all four areas?
- Label four pieces of blank paper with one of the following words on each piece: Body, Mind, Heart, and Spirit. As a family, brainstorm ways your family can Sharpen the Saw in each of the four areas of care. As a family, choose one thing from each of the lists that you would like to focus on and circle it. Commit to complete all four activities you have circled and set a date for completion. Celebrate together as a family when you complete your goal!
