NCSSM Summer Accelerator
Summer Accelerator is an exciting summer program created by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics for exceptional rising 5th-12th graders. We introduce students to exciting topics in hopes to encourage their interests in STEM concepts.
Early Accelerator for rising 5th and 6th Graders
Through interactive and hands-on activities, students will embark on a series of STEM adventures. These non-residential, day programs are held on NCSSM's Durham Campus and in Wilson, NC.
Accelerator for rising 7th - 9th Graders
For rising 7th to 9th grade, we introduce students to exciting topics at a critical age for engaging and encouraging their interests in STEM. Courses are each one week-long session that begins on Sunday afternoon and culminates on Friday afternoon at our Durham campus or Brevard, NC.
Accelerator for rising 10th - 12th Graders
Talented rising 10th to 12th grade students choose courses of interest that combine residential, hands-on learning on campus with online education. These courses are conducted over three weeks. The first two weeks of each course take place virtually, at the student's own pace. One week of each course takes place on campus, either in Durham or Brevard, NC.
Now Funded by Summer Accelerator, Step UP to STEM is a free one-week residential course for underrepresented minorities. It is an innovative interdisciplinary academic program that uses exciting real-world subjects to challenge current 8th graders (rising 9th graders) across North Carolina and build their skills in science, math, and communications. The program is open by application to African American, Hispanic American, and Native American 8th graders who live in North Carolina. The application opens on December 2.
Develop family habits that support your teen’s learning
The idea of “reinforcing learning” can be tricky when you are the parent of a high school student. You may not feel that you remember or know enough about what your teen is learning to reinforce it.
That’s OK. Parents can support learning by creating everyday opportunities that make it possible. Here’s how:
- Talk about the jobs people hold whenever you visit a business with your teen. Discuss the education needed for such a job, but keep the conversation casual. Do not turn the occasion into a lecture.
- Plan some family projects that involve math skills, such as painting a room or cooking a meal. Get your teen involved.
- Encourage your teen to research and explore. Ask him to help you pick out something your family needs or to find a new place for your family to visit.
- Let your teen know that you are interested in anything new he learns at school. Ask him to explain those concepts to you.
- Encourage your teen’s talents, even if they are not what you would have wished for him. Remember, these talents may become the foundation of his future career.
- Ask for your teen’s opinions. Teens are usually aware of major current events and have given them some thought. Make sure he knows that you value his opinion—whether you agree with it or not.

ACT Prep Course Offered at RCS
Calling all RCS students. Many parents and students have asked for ACT help, so we are launching this incredible opportunity at Roxboro Community School to help students.
Join us for this eight-hour exploration of the ACT that will explain the basic test structure of all five subject tests. We will share our best tips and strategies to slay this monster.
Please visit SMWUnlimited.com to register or click here to register: https://www.smwunlimited.com/store/p25/ACT_BOOT_CAMP_.html.
This workshop will have three parts:
1) We will start the morning by administering a full length ACT released test, so our students can experience what it is like to take a real ACT. Unfortunately, the pre-ACT is too short and too easy to properly prepare our students for this marathon like test. We will then break for a working lunch** where students and instructors will score their test. Scoring the test will allow students to evaluate where they are and where they want to be.
2) We will then spend the afternoon discussing the basic test structure of all five subject tests. We will share some of our best tips and strategies. We will show students (based on their earlier scores which strategies are most likely to give them the largest point increase). It is all about working smarter NOT harder.
3) We will end the workshop by creating individualized study plans that the student can use for the month of February to prepare for their school administered ACT that should fall during the last week of February (February 25 is the rumored NC ACT testing date).
This is proven test prep at less than $10 an hour.
When: February 1, 2020
Where: Roxboro Community School
Time: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The fine print: This class is open to Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors from Durham, Chatham, Person, and other surrounding counties. This opportunity is only available to the first 30 students that apply for this workshop. Registration is first-come, first-served. No refunds will be offered if a student misses the workshop for any reason. Registration fees will be refunded if the instructors must cancel the session. The workshop will be rescheduled for a later date if a weather closure is called by RCS's Administration.
Once students have registered and paid for the course, we will contact them via email with more information about the details and how to prepare for our boot camp.
**Students will need to bring a bagged lunch, as we will not break during the day for them to leave campus.
Mrs. DeVillier's Testing Corner
Reminder to all Juniors – ACT Day is February 25th
All 11th graders will take the ACT here on the RCS campus on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. The State of NC pays for this, saving you close to $70. Mrs. DeVillier will be visiting classes soon to give you more information about the test and permission slips to use if you would like to check out early after testing is over that day. In the meantime, start thinking about which colleges you want to receive your ACT scores. Watch your email inboxes for a letter listing the codes for NC colleges and universities. (Mrs. DeVillier will have codes for out-of-state colleges.)
Don’t forget, the ACT Academy allows you to link your Pre-ACT results to the Khan Academy and will customize practice plans just for you ….all for free. http://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/test-preparation.html.
If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Mrs. DeVillier at 336.597.0020, ext 114, or by email at devillierjh@roxborocs.org
