News and Updates

Hello Orenco Families!

Our 21-22 school year is just around the corner and I am so looking forward to seeing everyone again. I know this new school year brings with it all kinds of thoughts and feelings. Excitement! Nervous? Wonder!? This newsletter is to share what we know for now!

**Please scroll down to see the news about after-school daycare at Orenco**

We are interested in two main questions for you--What are your hopes for your child this school year? And, what can we do as a school community to make that happen?

In service to you,

Allison Combs, Principal

News and Notes

  • Daily Breakfast and Lunch will be FREE and offered to all students this school year. Students will use their cafeteria cards to access the meals.
  • Students will eat breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria at a 3 ft distance when possible (and other common space if needed: undercover area, gym, large hallway, etc)
  • Our regular school hours will be 8:00-2:20 pm. Wednesday dismissal is at 1:50 pm. Please note that our tardy bell rings at 8 am and Morning Meetings begin in classrooms at this time. We request that you plan on arriving at school between 7:35-7:50 am.
  • We will offer tours of the school on Friday, September 3rd. More details to come to sign up and visit the building.
  • We have new security updates installed around the building. This has made things a little different with entry and access. (Thank you to the Bond!)

After School Daycare Options

We are saying Bye to "Blast" and saying Hello to "Champions!" Please see the attached flyer for details, cost, and info on how to register. Champions will be an after-school provider from 2:30-5:30 pm daily for Orenco students K-6 starting September 20th.

Registration opens 8/16 at discoverchampions.com, and space is limited. Our school office doesn’t handle registration, so please contact the Champions Family Support team at 800-246-2154 or email them at ChampionsHelp@kc-education.com with any questions. I hope many of you will take advantage of this new partnership that supports your whole family!

Champions also has employment opportunities--call them with questions.

Happenings from the summer

  • Trees along the sidewalk on 71st Ave were removed and will be replaced in October.
  • We repurposed the 6'x36' flower bed outside of the kindergarten classrooms into a new learning garden space.
  • ExplORENCO was a 2-week summer learning opportunity from August 2-13th. About 50 students participated along with teachers from Orenco and interns from Liberty High School. A free daycare program was also offered in the afternoons focused on literacy and STEM activities.
  • We have had a few staff changes so we are excited for you to meet our new teachers and assistants!
  • HSD has many job opportunities! Please check out our openings on the district website!

All students enrolled at Orenco will be receiving a new device! (You may return your old ones or keep--they just won't get any new updates after a certain amount of time).

  • Students K-6 will bring them back and forth to school unless a parent says otherwise.

Thank you to the School Bond for this purchase!

Library/Media Center News

Although our library was closed to visitors in the 20-21 school year, it still was a very happening place! Here are some of the projects and work that went on in the library under the direction of our very talented and knowledgeable Media Assistant, Ms. Rachael Patterson:

  • Weeded out books that were outdated, irrelevant, and not used.
  • Genre-fied the library collection so students can find books on topics of interests more easily (Ex: Cars and Trucks, Animals, Princesses, Sports, Countries)
  • Purchased about $1000 in new books
  • Focused on purchasing new books that represented a greater cultural and racial diversity of characters and themes representative of our school
  • Donated books and made them available for students around our community
  • Purchase of hands-on activities for our school STEAM lab

Future volunteer help: organizing and packing up old curriculum and materials, assistance with organizing items in STEAM lab, hands-on demonstrations

  • Kindergarten registration for 2021-2022 began on Monday, March 1st. Registration for all grade levels began on this day, too.
  • Kindergarten slide show, English: Slideshow
  • Espanol slideshow: Spanish
  • Please call us if you need help with registration: 503-844-1370

General Dress Code Reminders

With our return to school coming up, this is a good time to revisit some safe and appropriate dress options for Orenco students:

  • No flip-flops. Please wear a shoe with a strap to stay on your foot safely.
  • Undergarments like bra straps and underwear from shorts should not be showing.
  • No spaghetti straps. Tank-tops should be about three finger-widths wide.
  • All shirts should have sleeves or straps holding it up.
  • Cover midriffs/no bellies showing.

We are welcoming visitors and volunteers at Orenco again! Here are some tips to make the process go smoothly...More details to come.

  • Background checks should be complete and up to date
  • Visitors sign into our form as part of contact tracing
  • Vaccination status will be asked as part of the form/contact tracing
  • Must wear mask
  • A limited number of volunteers per day will be set
  • Movement in the building by volunteers will be limited (not jumping around to lots of classrooms)
