Pleasant Hill Weekly Update
May 21, 2021
Message from Mrs. Steele
Dear Pleasant Hill Families,
We have definitely had an exciting week at Pleasant Hill School and have been really busy making final preparations for the end of our year together. There is a lot of information in this update so please read through carefully.
Fall Reopening Committee Update:
This past Tuesday, the PH Fall Reopening Committee had it's third meeting. We continued the work of identifying solutions for the many space challenges we have at PH. We are pleased to report that the team created viable recommendations for 9 out of 11 challenges we are facing this coming fall. We will share these proposed solutions with PH staff before making a final decision and continue working on the final 2 concerns at our next meeting. At our next meeting, we will also take a first look at creating our whole-school schedule. One component of our schedule that we know families are curious about is whether we can return to a pre-pandemic specials schedule where students have more time in specials throughout the year. There are many pieces to the schedule puzzle and if families have any other questions specific to this topic, please make sure to reach out to me or our parent representatives:

2nd Grade Celebration:
With the change in guidance from DOE, we are excited to be able to invite our 2nd grade families to attend a 2nd grade parade on your child's last day of school. 2nd grade parade will take place at the end of the day on your student's last day and we will have 3 parades so that all families have an opportunity to attend and we can maintain some social distancing outdoors. The parade will take place outside and around our building campus where we can cheer for our 2nd graders and wish them well as they move on to Wentworth next year! Please plan to stay socially distanced during the event. We are also putting together a special video dedicated to our 2nd grade class.
If your 2nd grader's last day is Tuesday, June 15th you may join us from 2:15PM-2:45PM for the parade and celebration of learning display.
If your 2nd grader's last day is Wednesday, June 16th, you may join us from 10:30AM-11:00AM for a parade and celebration of learning display. This parade also includes any Cohort C families.
If your 2nd grader's last day is Thursday, June 17th OR Friday, June 18th, you may join us from 2:15PM-2:45PM for the parade and celebration of learning display.
Chromebook Return:
Our last week of school will be focused on celebrations and some fun activities to wrap up our year. Teachers will not be assigning work via SeeSaw and there will be no asynchronous work assigned for students after their last face to face day of school. Basically, their last face to face day is their last day of school.
With that said, we will collect student chromebooks over the last week of school on each student's last face to face school day. If you are unsure what day is your student's actual last face to face day, please reach out to your teacher or the office. Students need to have all components of their chromebook returned: the device, the case and the charger. If your student is not planning to be present every day we have them scheduled, please let us know ASAP so we can coordinate chromebook collection with you.
Our current collection schedule for HYBRID students looks like this:
Tuesday: 13 students
Wednesday: 39 students
Thursday: 16 students
Friday: 83 students
COHORT C (Fully Remote) students will return Chromebooks on Friday, June 18th.
Last names A-L should come between 9:00-9:30AM.
Last names M-Z should come between 9:45AM-10:15AM
Cohort C teachers will share final week plans with families in upcoming communications.
We know this is a lot of information at once! We are also planning grade level field days by class during our last week and will send more info next week. Please reach out with any questions. Enjoy your weekend!
Best,
Jesseca Steele

Summer is coming and maybe with it, a slower pace. This could be a good time to gather together some supplies for your child to practice having a “maker mindset” by building, tinkering, designing, being a scientist, and being a creative problem solver! Supporting children to have a “maker mindset” helps to build confidence and agency as well as many other skills including creative problem solving and perseverance. Here are some ideas and resources on ways to cultivate a “maker mindset” for your young learner.
How to Nurture a Maker Mindset Includes great graphic for a quick overview.
How to set up an Art Cart (or sculpting, tinkering, painting). Self sufficiency is highlighted here.
Tinkerlab Supplies & Resources This list is helpful if you’re looking to freshen up your supplies, or if grandma is looking for a gift for your child. However kids can do a lot with recyclables so no need to buy new things.
Engineering Design Process This visual is used in our K-5 schools and could be used with at home projects too.
“On a self-serve, organized space for making: Children learn to ask and test their own questions; they seek out materials that help them realize solutions to self-designed problems; you are treating them with respect based on the believe that they can accomplish what they set their minds to; and finding materials on their own saves you time and supports their independence.” Rachelle Doorley in Tinkerlab, 2014
