Media Literacy
What is Media Literacy? If I was to describe Media Literacy to someone, I would say Media Literacy is knowledge of social media networks. Social media networks are fun, and let you connect with people or family that might have moved or live somewhere else. Social Medias let you post pictures, and post what you are doing or where you are going. It is important to know how to use a social media network. You have to be careful with what you’re posting online because once it’s up there it can be seen by many people, even if you delete it, it is still on there forever. Also, there are many creepers on the internet who pretend to be non-creepers. They put their profile picture as someone very good looking and online chat with you and maybe make you feel like they are someone you would like to get to know. It is not safe to meet someone online and meet them somewhere private or alone. Therefore, it is very important to know who you let follow you or friend you. Also, make sure you control your privacy settings, each social network has privacy settings that let you control who can look at your pictures or your profile. It would be a good idea to make your page private and only let people you know see your profile. Colleges are also on social networks. So if you are an athlete, it is also very important to watch what you say because they are going to be monitoring you on social networks. For example, if you go to a party over the weekend, it is okay to post pictures as long as they are online appropriate, meaning no one is naked, no one is holding alcohol/drugs. Make sure what you post online is safe, still have fun and post things you like but just think before posting if the post is something that can hurt you later on.

The Happy Holocaust
On January 30th 1933, the first round of Jews was taken from their house at 4 am. The people were confused; they didn’t know what was happening. They kept being told to be quiet and that they were being taken to the place of their dreams. They rode in gray, long, smelly, hot buses with no bathrooms. They were given water and a piece of bread twice. They rode for about 6 hours when they finally reached a stopped. They were thrown out the buses and led to a small red building with barbed wired gates. They saw no one but Nazi guards and German nurses. When they reached the inside of the building, women and men were split up, including children. They all had to take off all their clothes and put on blue jumpsuits, as if they were in a jail. Everyone had to shave off all their hair and get a tattoo on their wrist. The tattoo was a number, everyone got their own number and that’s what their new name would be. There were 80 people in total. They were put to work immediately, they were all confused. They thought they were going to the place of their dreams? Where were they? What was this? Why them? The women were cleaning pots and floors, while the children swept up dust and raked leaves. The men were sent to work in mines and dig out gold. This went on for the next 3 days, they had a piece of bread in the morning, and a cup of beans at night. They had 3 visits to the water foundation per day, that’s it. Now there were 120 people in the camp. All doing the same thing. It was Feb 4th, when the first 20 people were put in a gas chamber and never came back out. The Jews started to realize they weren’t ever going to make it out of this camp, this was it, and this was the end for them. Everyone was asleep when all of a sudden there was a gun shot in the air, it was around 2:43 AM, the Jews woke up and went to see what was happening. They saw a man with over 200 people standing in front of the building, everyone had signs and were protesting. These people were fighting to help save the Jews.. The Nazis ran out and threatened to shoot everyone but there was more people than there were Nazis. The Nazis knew they were over-powered, and had to surrender. The famous Adolf Hitler finally came and tried to explain what was happening, he was shot and everyone cheered. The Jews were all rescued, 24 of them had died there, and a special memorial was set up for them. The Jews later found out that the man who put together this rebellion was Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt had found out about this secret camp because he had spies looking around to see what the Nazis were up too. It was Roosevelt who had saved the Jews, and prevents a Holocaust from happening.
Another Brick in the Wall Part 2
Imagine living in a world where you had no freedom. The song “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2” by Pink Floyd fits the novel 1984 perfectly. The people in 1984 don’t get any rights, they don’t get any education, they’re not allowed to love or show affection. When you look at a wall of bricks, the wall looks exactly the same. Some bricks may have a mark or a tint of a different color. That’s how the people in 1984 are looked at; they look the same with different colored hair or eyes. The Party doesn't see people as actual human beings, they’re more like robots that they have complete control of. A dystopian world is what drives the human mind insane, people’s thoughts are all over the place and they forget what truth is. No human being should ever have complete control over another human being. Everyone’s mind thinks differently and being allowed to only think certain thoughts is pure evil. The Party isn't helping their people, and communist groups like the Party will never be helping people. If the government wants to help people, they need to treat humans as equals and give them freedom to do what they love.

We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey teacher leave them kids alone
All in all it's just another brick in the wall
All in all you're just another brick in the wall
We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey teacher leave us kids alone
All in all you're just another brick in the wall
All in all you're just another brick in the wall
What I've Learned
When I heard seniors would no longer be taking British Lit, I got really happy. Everyone kept saying Media Literacy was the easiest class they've ever taken. So, I was thinking "sweet, I'm gonna have a easy class senior year." Wrong, Media Literacy is actually one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. It's a very challenging class that makes you think from a different perspective. I've learned how to analyze articles and stories, I've learned how to watch and understand news reports, etc. Reading 1984 and watching V for Vendetta made me realize that even though those stories may be fiction, they say a lot about our world today. Media Literacy was different than all my other Language Arts classes because it was different. In our class we used a variety of different learning techniques, we watched movies, read articles, read a book, wrote essays, wrote papers, precis, and more. We learned how to express our words into thoughts other ways besides writing essays. Honestly, I didn't think I would enjoy this class, I thought it would be pointless, but the class has left a big affect on me. I see things differently now, I notice more things out in the world, and I love it. I love being able to see things more than one way. The class is more than just a class, it's kind of like a life learning class. Once you're done with a class like Media Literacy you look back and think "wow, that class changed me." I think Mr. Zopf is a very inspirational teacher, he's different, he wants to change how you see things, he pushes you. That's why the class is so different, he makes it a class that is actually challenging for you because it involves you digging hard into your mind and thinking in a different perspective. I think Media Literacy will be a great course for upcoming students. Majority of people will realize it was a class that actually leaves an impact on you. It did on me.
