A Note from the Principal
Happy New Year, Centennial Families!
The second half of our year is off to a great and positive start!
I want to begin by saying thank you again to each of you who helped us with our Fun Run fundraiser back in September; we knew then that the money raised would go toward outside improvements that would directly benefit the students. Our savvy and dedicated PTO Board worked together to gather information from our staff and students to determine what projects were most needed and would be most beneficial to all students.
I am most grateful for all of our Buffalos because all have given, somehow, to these outdoor projects coming to fruition. With the input provided to the PTO board, in addition to our joint research, we learned that what students need most at this point is actually just the chance to play together in an even more awesome and safe way by making improvements to our playground area. (Many items were looking worn, the soccer field was run down to pave dirt, the play equipment was worn out, etc.!)
The PTO Board is creating a strategic plan for our playground area so that profits gained from our fundraiser projects will go even more directly to benefitting our Centennial students and community. This year, a new soccer field (with beautiful turf) will be installed, and students will also be receiving new play equipment. You may also see the new concrete boundary around the large playground; this will serve to house the shredded rubber mulch that is forthcoming from our district to ensure our students enjoy an even more safe playtime during recess! (With that said, you may notice dump trucks and other construction vehicles on our Centennial property in the coming two weeks! Thank you for your patience while our playground is under construction.)
In other news, teachers will begin administering the AimsWeb Winter Assessments this week. This information serves to tell us if students are achieving on level, below level, or above level, as well as informing us about how fast students are making academic gains as compared to grade-level peers nationally. Once the assessments are complete, our teams meet together to review their students' data and problem-solve about the best ways to adapt instruction to support all students in making appropriate growth.
You will be receiving a report from your child's teacher before the end of January, informing you about your student's progress.
Finally, I encourage you to "Save the Date" for January 25 at 6 p.m. for our Conscious Discipline Parent Seminar (especially if you want to know why your child acts the way he / she does, and how you may lovingly support your child with all his / her big feelings. Our PTO is kindly providing refreshments, and childcare will be provided (for Centennial students only). I hope to see you there!
Besides all that's happening above, please check out the many exciting and important things happening at Centennial in the announcements below!
With appreciation and kind regards,
Ellie Webb, Principal
