Fair of Hearts!

Thanks to everyone who helped out with the Fair of Hearts last week! It was a fabulous day and the children had a great time!

Math Learning!

We have been busy in math this week. We spent a lot of time looking closely at problems and learning more about fractions. We also spent time solving multi-step problems independently and with partners.

Informational Writing

Students are busy finishing up their first informational pieces of writing this week. Students were able to choose where and how to publish their pieces. Some chose to put them on their blogs. Others created movies to add to our Youtube channel. Others created books on paper or with the Book Creator App. No matter how they published, the goal was to learn about creating good informational pieces that included visuals, text features such as bold words and captions, and interesting leads.

Upcoming Reading Celebrations!

The next few weeks are full of Reading Celebrations. Next week is World Read Aloud Day and the following week is a time to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday for Read Across America. We will be busy with lots of great events to celebrate reading.

On Monday, February 22, we will Skype with Mr. Schu who is an expert on children's books and a children's librarian in Chicago. He blogs daily and keeps up with all the best new children's books. You can follow his blog at Watch. Connect. Read.

On Tuesday, February 23, we will Skype with children's author, Mitali Perkins. She is the author of Tiger Boy, the book we recently finished as a read aloud. We will have the chance to ask her lots of questions about the book and her writing!

On Wednesday, February 24, we will Skype with children's author, Louise Borden. Louise is an Ohio author with great books for 3rd graders. She will read to us a bit and talk to us about the ways she researches for her writing.

Wednesday, March 2 is the official celebration of Read Across America. On that day, we'll have an All Day Read! More information will come about that but kids will spend the day reading lots of great books, magazines and more!
