Math Updates
In Math this week, we worked on division number stories that had remainders. We worked to make sense of remainders, deciding if they were extra OR if it meant that we needed to use the remainder. For example, there are 24 students and 5 kids can sit at a table. How many tables are needed? We will need 5 tables, one of them will be full and one will have 4 students sitting at it. We then used number models to represent our thinking, noting that if there were remainders the answer is not equal groups. Instead we said, "24 divided by 5 is 4... with a remainder of 4." After understanding the concept of remainders, we learned about making arrays using division.
Building a READING LIFE
n Reading this week, we worked on identifying figurative language and using context to understand its meaning. We started by identifying these phrases in our read aloud, Stone Fox. We found pieces of writing like, "he was grinning ear to ear" and "he knew the road by heart" and worked hard to figure out their meaning as used in the book. Students were then challenged to find this type of writing in their own books, and then they were asked to share what they found and the meanings with their reading partners.
We then discussed how some parts of books signal for readers to think, "Huh?" And to ask questions. Often those questions are “How could…?” and “Why?” Then readers muse over possible answers, rereading and rethinking. We practiced going back to other parts in our books to help us try to understand these hard parts.
Finally, we thought about the question, "Why did the author include that?" We discussed that knowing that authors do things on purpose, readers gather information from the text to try and answer that question.
Word Study
Word Study tests will be on Friday, October 12th.
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
Writing long & strong
This week in Writing, we learned the correct way to punctuate dialogue using commans and quotation marks in our writing. We worked with partners to make sure that all confusing parts were understood by readers who were not a part of our small moment. And then we worked hard to write an ending that left readers with a feeling. Many students want to just write "The End" but we know that when a reader finishes our story, we want them to feel happy, sad, or at the very least we want them to feel as if our story was complete. Next week we will be editing and then publishing our stories!

Technology
Science
This week we learned more about levers and how the postion of the fulcrum changes the amount of force needed to move an object. We then discussed friction. We did two different experiments to understand how friction impedes or slows down an object at motion. We first explored the friction of our hands rubbing together. We added soap and water to the rubbing and found that a lubrication will reduce friction. We then used a soapy mixture to show how that this is true for objects on other surfaces as well. We measured the force it took for washers to move across a distance on the table with and without the lubrication. We talked about how we could reduce friction in real life objects as well.
