First Year Experience Program Pilot
This fall, the Library piloted an Information Literacy Instruction curriculum specifically for First Year Experience (FYE) classes. This approach enabled the Library to reach new full time students with an introduction to the library resources we provide and offered a jump start in the development of their research skills. Classes consisted of instruction by a librarian, followed by a group assignment and concluded with an assessment. The result is a new Outcomes Assessment study that gauges students' knowledge after their first encounter with library instruction and provides a snapshot of a student’s information literacy skills early on in their college career.
This will help the Library evaluate our instruction methods as well as provide insight into our Information Literacy Instruction program’s impact on students.
The assessment data was collected in the form of a ten question quiz using clickers in the Library’s electronic classroom. The questions were used to address four of the Information Literacy Competency Standards for college students set by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL).
During this endeavor the Library taught 35 FYE classes and reached 718 students with an overall assessment average of 75%.
Calling Local Authors!
Have you written a book? Let us know! The library is looking for faculty and staff who have published books to take part in a local authors book display. Contact Jaime Hammond (x8199/jhammond@nv.edu) to participate!
Making Snow
In December, student Circulation Staff members turned the library into a winter wonderland with hand-made, three dimensional snowflakes made from simple white paper. The beautiful and unusual display proved so popular that NVCC students, faculty and staff stop by in droves, asking how to do it! Come on over, folks, and our student staff will show you how to make these unique winter ornaments for your own home, and you can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate while you’re at it!
Giving Thanks!
Students, staff and faculty noted what they were thankful for on colorful paper leaves hung on the library's windows. Here's a few of them: “Thankful for NVCC” “I am thankful for having all my family with me this year” “Being in school” “Free WiFi” “Life, Love, liberty” “The many different types of people who share this world” “French fries” “The semester’s almost over” “Opportunity for success” We'd like to add one more- we are thankful for you!
