The community's support would be requested periodically in such ways as purchasing/donating an item, providing holiday gifts, spreading the word on clothing and food drives, or donating a service. When assistance is needed, an email will be sent to the group explaining the need and each member can respond if able to help at that time. All information remains confidential with respect to the families being assisted. Please contact Miranda Chism at mchism@ptisd.org if you would like to be a part of this group.

Birch Elementary
Ahoy Mateys! At Birch Elementary we are full steam ahead!
In math, 4th grade has been using strategies to multiply up to a four-digit number by a one-digit number and to multiply a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number. They have been building area models using the partial products strategy.
In science, we have just finished our unit on matter. We learned about different properties of matter, including mass, volume, states (solid, liquid, gas), temperature, magnetism, and the ability to sink or float. Students built solar ovens using a pizza box, foil, plastic wrap, and tape. We have tested them with a crayon to see if we could change matter with temperature. We will use the ovens again when we study energy!
In 2nd grade math, our students have been learning about money, identifying even/odd numbers, composing/decomposing numbers, points on a number line, and ordering least to greatest.
2nd grade science has been a blast! We have been studying how combining certain materials can change their state. The students were able to conduct an experiment with soft drinks and ice cream as they learned about the different states of matter. The soft drink (liquid) was combined with the ice cream (solid) to create bubbles (gas). Coke floats for everyone!!!
I don’t know who enjoyed homecoming week more, our students or teachers! So many of our kiddos participated. Everyone enjoyed seeing their friends and staff members dressed up as well. We had so much fun and look forward to many more fun-filled days ahead. Go Pirates!!!

It’s Book Fair Time
It is that time of year again when the leaves start to change colors, the weather turns cool and everyone anxiously awaits the beginning of their favorite pastime. I am sure one of your first thoughts is of football, but I am talking about spending hours engrossed in your favorite book.
Every year, the schools offer Book Fairs that typically take place in the Fall and again in the Spring. This year, Pine Tree Middle School is holding a Fall Book Fair from November 5-9. Online sales will take place from October 20-November 9. You might be wondering how shopping at the Book Fair can benefit your student or even their school. The Book Fair offers numerous reading choices that students can purchase. Selections of books are available at various reading levels and price points. Not only can you get great deals on books, but proceeds from the Book Fair sales afford the school an opportunity to purchase new books for the library.
Please consider taking the time to stop by your local Book Fair where you can find something great to read and help support literacy in your child’s school.

First year STEM students with emphasis on Science and Engineering
Students spent the first three weeks completing a series of team collaborations and becoming familiar with the engineering design process. They were introduced to the multiple disciplines of engineering with an emphasis on civil and mechanical design. They were challenged to create solutions to problems and to improve on current technologies and techniques.
The majority of the challenges involve simple tools and materials which many of the students have little to no experience. They have learned to plan, design, build, cut, drill, glue, test, and redesign in an effort to make a better product.
During the course of the semester, the students will complete challenges in the following engineering disciplines: civil, mechanical, chemical, aerospace, biological, electrical, and environmental. Students are expected to apply the same principles of physics, chemistry, and biology they are learning in conjunction with the science curriculum for the 7th and 8th TEKS.
Lastly, the students have created personalized digital portfolios that include photos, videos, and journal reflections of their work. The digital portfolio will allow the students to share their work/experience with family and friends. The portfolio will serve as a tool and a memory as their engineering education develops.

Thurmond, Vandiver Crowned Homecoming Royalty
Cheyenne Thurmond and Colton Vandiver were crowned royalty during the 2018 Homecoming ceremonies prior to Pine Tree’s 55-50 victory over Mount Pleasant.
Thurmond, a senior cheerleader and athlete, was crowned by 2017 Queen Keyana Kim. Thurmond had previously served as royalty during her other three years of high school, so this crowning was a culmination of honor for her. Thurmond said she was proud to be the queen for PTHS, and she thanked all of the people who voted for her.
Vandiver, a cheer co-captain and member of the Pine Tree Band percussion unit, was surprised when his name was announced as King and he was crowned by 2017 King Mose Jeffery. “I was honored to be nominated and did not think I would win, but I was surprised and very honored when my name was called,” he said.
Other senior nominees included Ori Persons, Michael Shavers and Titus Rucker, along with Zoey Colbert, Alexis Vo and Natalie Wright.
Junior representatives were Carson Parmalee and Alexis Allen. Sophomore representatives were DeAundre Heath and Jia Lewis. Freshman representatives were De’Acaeon Jones and Aniya Gibson. Distinguished alumni were also named and alums from the Class of 1988 were honored as they enjoyed their 30 year reunion.
Community members were invited to take selfies in front of a background and send them to the district public relations personnel, and a good crowd was on hand as Pine Tree handed Mount Pleasant a district defeat and improved to 2-0 in district and 4-1 for the year.
ExCEL
ExCEL High School Student Council, along with faculty and staff, conducted its annual car wash fundraiser in order to raise proceeds for a field experience to NASA. The Student Council leaders chose NASA because many of them are interested in STEM careers after graduation.
Due to their hard work and dedication, they met their fundraising goal and are excited about the opportunity to learn more about science and engineering. We are proud of our young scholars for giving up a Saturday to pursue such a worthwhile endeavor.
We salute them.
PACE
On Tuesday, October 2nd, PACE Campus hosted National Night Out for the third consecutive year. Staff, students, families, community partners, and first responders gathered together for fellowship, food, fun, and games.
Attendees were served chili dogs and nachos, there was an ice cream sundae bar and cookies, and good old fashioned lemonade or iced tea to wash it down. On the front lawn folks sat and talked about the community over games of cornhole, Uno, dominoes, Headbandz, and Connect Four. Inside there was Jenga, chess, and lively discussions, while the youth played a friendly and competitive game of 3-on-3 basketball.
In continuation of the vision of HOPE Notes that began at ast year's NNO and was then revived during the Spring after the tragedy at Stoneman-Douglas High School in FL, Notes of Thanks were written to our local first responders.
PACE Campus would like to thank the PACE SAVE Promise Club youth leaders that stepped up and served; helping to set up the canopies, tables, and chairs before the event, and then clean up afterwards.
