The Carleton Chronicle
A weekly update from Carleton Middle School
Our Future is looking bright
In the midst of teacher walk-throughs and observations, I have had the pleasure of witnessing several amazing things occurring in our classrooms. I want to take a few moments to write about one in particular in our combined TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) Physical Education (PE) class.
Our adaptive PE teacher works with our MoCi (Moderately Cognitive Impaired) students during 1st hour alongside our 8th grade Fitness for Life class. In order to benefit both classes, the students are working collaboratively on functional life skills and basic sports movements (throwing a football, for example). Every day there are a handful of students from Mr. Rocheleau's Fitness for Life class that work with Ms. deCardenas' adaptive PE students on various dexterity requirements.
I was able to witness a student help a peer tie their tennis shoe. We also had students providing positive praise and feedback to each other on the completion of tasks. There were 8th grade students that were sustaining a conversation with a non-verbal student in the gym. One 8th grader modeled the proper form for throwing a football and reminded our MoCi student to take a step when throwing. Lastly, several high fives and smiles were exchanged!
I decided to call down several students after gym class was over to gauge their level of interaction with the collaborative class environment. Below are some quotes:
"It reminds me about being patient."
"I like helping others and it's a nice break from an occasional elbow in the side while playing handball."
"I have a brother at home that is very different than me and it reminds me of working with him."
"I've made new friends because of this class."
"Sometimes it's just nice to help someone else out as opposed to always thinking about yourself.
"You know Mr. Kausch, we're all the same with just a few differences."
My principal heart is FULL and WARM. Have a great weekend and congratulations parents, we have some true leaders here at Carleton!

REACH for your best
Power School
We are thrilled that so many parents are utilizing Power School! This is a great way to stay on top of your child's grades, assignments, and attendance. However, if you see an alert regarding attendance, please know it may not have been updated yet by the office. We attempt to have all attendance accurately recorded by 11:00 AM. After this time, an automated call will go out to those who remain unverified in our system. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
