What's News at Magee?
#3 - December 2018
Am I learning? How do I know?
Our teachers work diligently to understand what learners need and when they need "it". The ultimate goal is for our learners to know what they have mastered and be able to apply it in their daily work and life. Our teachers continue to work to build this self-efficacy in each learner at Magee. It is a powerful experience when a student can look at his/her work and prove their own learning to themselves, a peer, teacher, or parent.
In classrooms throughout Magee you can see students self-assessing their work in a variety of developmental and age appropriate ways. Some may use a self-assessment checklist created specifically for that target or standard. Some may use success criteria either co-created as a group or by the teacher. Self-assessment and success criteria are both oppportunities for classroom discussion of quality work, as well as examination of student work samples. Students need to know and understand what is expected and how to get there. No matter which method students are using, they are able to look at their own work to determine where they are at, what can be improved or what can be celebrated they can make adjustments, seek support, and set a goal for moving forward. This process helps students build skills in reflection, knowledge and confidence that if they are not there YET, they know what to do to get there!
The true power in education is not waiting for someone to bestow the learning; but rather, in creating, constructing, and actively seeking growth in the next steps.
