Our Good Character word for January is KINDNESS – this month our students will be learning about and practicing KINDNESS through their classroom guidance lessons and through information on our morning news show. ‘Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give – it doesn’t cost much but it accomplishes much.’ We hope you will find moments this month to encourage your children to show kindness.
Our Tigerville Toy Drive will run January 7th through the 18th – bins will be available in our lobby for your like new, gently used toys. Student Council will be collecting these items and donating them to a local children’s shelter. Please help us to show KINDNESS by looking in your closets and toy bins for like new, gently used toys your children no longer play with.
Students in grades 3-5 will participate in Career Day on January 25th. Special guests from the Bonds Career Center will be presenting information and demonstrations to our students on 11 different career fields! This is a great opportunity for our students to learn, ask questions, and plan for the future.
Tigerville Elementary is looking to grow its Mentor program this month! Mentors meet once a week with students, mostly during breakfast or lunchtime, and provide a friendly ear and serve as a stable role model for these students. This is a very rewarding experience for both Mentor and student – and takes only 30 minutes a week of your time! You can show KINDNESS by becoming a Tigerville Mentor – check our website and Facebook page for more details.
Notes from the Music Room
It's so hard to believe that almost half of the school year is over. The kids are doing some amazing things in the music class this year. The level of talent is out of this world.
Starting the week of January 21st we will have another percussion Artist, Mr. Holland, to help us learn some drumming patterns that go along with Madagascar. He will be with us all the way to Monday, Feb.11th which is our next Arts Showcase night. Go ahead and put it on your calendars because you won't want to miss the performance by our student drummers.
All 3rd-5th Grade students should have a Recorder at this point. K4/5 is still singing, dancing and playing music games using the Quaver music program. 1st and 2nd will be in the keyboard lab once Mr. Holland is finished with his Unit on Feb. 11th. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send an email or give me a call. Thanks.
P.E. Notes
Lines from the Art Room
Winter greetings to all creative people! I love living in South Carolina where the four seasons are evident in our landscapes and views! Winter is a great time to look for the beauty in nature with a season that takes on a unique and fresh appearance when seen through the eyes of an artist. I appreciate all the support the arts have been given in the past few months with our holiday art work, the Original Works fundraiser and the “winter arts” the students have been working on for the month of December. Please feel free to drop by the school soon to see our winter arts display on the banners in the art hallway. We will be completing the artwork adding final details the first week we return from break and hope to have it all up by the second week of January for your viewing pleasure. I would like to recommend a website called Art For Kids Hub. This site features a father/son duo who teaches young students how to draw various subjects. The father draws first in a guided drawing format and the son then repeats what the father has done. This is a good site that I have used for years and have always been amazed at how great the students can do following this technique! It makes for great practice during those long winter days when your kids can’t seem to find enough things to do to keep their interest levels up. Please supervise your student as always when using the internet. The link is as follows: https://www.artforkidshub.com/.
Coming up later in January, we will be hosting another artist in residence through the SmartARTS program of the Metropolitan Arts Council of Greenville County. This artist, Moody Black will work with students in writing poetry and using photography as a means of putting images with their poems. This interaction between creative writing and expressive written word should promote fun and exciting lesson for merging classroom content with arts education! Have a great winter and don’t forget to take the time to look closer and dig deeper!!Library Loop
If you have a student in either kindergarten, first, or second grade, ask them to show you the hand motion for problem and solution in a story. We will be working that in the library in January. Also, third, fourth, and fifth graders will be working on citing text evidence. They will need to find evidence in a text to back up their answers to questions.
As the new year starts, make a resolution to model reading for your student. Statistics show that children learn from modeling. This includes modeling from teachers as well as parents. Help your student develop the lifelong habit of reading by modeling reading for enjoyment in front of your children.
