About the Award
How to Win
- Nomination
- Application
- Selection
- Recognition
Nominations
Nominations can be made by anyone. You can even initiate the nomination yourself!
Application
Nominees will be invited to complete an application for the award. In Texas, eligible teachers who submit a completed application by the deadline will receive 25 CPE hours. Since the 2021 application deadline has already passed, your next opportunity to apply will be in February of 2022. This gives you time to prepare and polish your application for the win!
Selection
Applications are reviewed by a committee of people including prominent mathematicians, researchers, and teachers. State committees will select finalists for each state. Subsequently, national review committees will be formed to select the final Presidential Awardees. As previously stated, each state may recognize up to 6 finalists, and the President may recognize up to 108 exemplary teachers yearly.
Recognition
Recognition not only involves a $10,000 award, it also comes with a certificate signed by the President, a trip to DC, and other perks like professional development opportunities.

The Origin of Mathematics and Statistic Awareness Month
"Despite the increasing importance of mathematics to the progress of our economy and society, enrollment in mathematics programs has been declining at all levels of the American educational system. Yet the application of mathematics is indispensable in such diverse fields as medicine, computer sciences, space exploration, the skilled trades, business, defense, and government. To help encourage the study and utilization of mathematics, it is appropriate that all Americans be reminded of the importance of this basic branch of science to our daily lives."
