Soaring Over MDE

A Note of Gratitude...
Dear MDE Families,
We are thankful for you! As we prepare to take time off from school November 21-25, 2022, for the Thanksgiving break, we are grateful for everyone who has helped to restore a routine for showing up to school while supporting students and families. Daily routines are essential for reducing stress and creating a sense of security, especially after the chaotic transitions experienced over the last two years.
As long as your child is healthy, please encourage showing up to class when school is in session. Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as connect to peers and their teachers. Monday attendance is a great way to start the week off on a positive note and organize for the week.
We thank:
- Our students and their families who do their best to show up to class every day even when it isn’t easy.
- Our teachers who have gone above and beyond to help make school a welcoming learning environment where students can thrive.
- Our administrators who help us work together to ensure we are healthy and safe, feel a sense of community and experience the excitement of an engaging learning environment.
- Our many, many healers and helpers - the support staff and community volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need.
May these days off be restful and healing.
- We look forward to seeing you again when school resumes on November 28, 2022.
Sincerely,
Katie Sanchez
A Note From Our Counselor...
Reflection on Report Cards
Report Cards are a great way to celebrate achievements, discuss new goals, and reflect on strengths and weaknesses. Students have strengths and weaknesses, just as adults do. I encourage students to embrace challenges and failures as much as they celebrate success. Some students are very uncomfortable with challenges or failure. This can lead to avoidance, anxiety, or even sadness. It is important for kids to understand that being a kid is all about making mistakes and learning from them. It is how they grow! I like to tell the kids that FAIL stands for First Attempt In Learning:). Focus on a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset with your child.
Inchy the Book Vending Machine
During our first month with Inchy, our book vending machine, 70% of MDE students earned a token to get a free book, of their choice from Inchy. (A HUGE Thank you to our PFC for helping to purchase the new books that fill the vending machine!) Students have the opportunity to earn a token each month! If you have any questions about the program, please ask your child's teacher, Ms. Zimmer, or Mrs. Sanchez! Seeing students excited to read and earn their AR points, is what it is all about!!
HOPE Holiday Donation Drive
MDUSD's Homeless Outreach Program for Education (HOPE) is doing their annual holiday donation drive to support our homeless and foster youth students. They are asking for gift cards from the following types of places where students can make holiday purchases:
• Target
• Old Navy
• Generic prepaid credit cards
• Walmart
• GAP
• Gift cards to local restaurants
They are requesting card denominations of $25 or $50, with the amounts clearly marked, so recipients know how much is available to spend. Gift cards can be mailed or delivered to the below address: Mt. Diablo HOPE 2730 Salvio Street, Room 24 Concord, CA 94519
Please send your donations by December 16, 2022.
