Massachusetts
The colony of Massachusetts was founded in 1630 by John Winthrop. Plymouth Rock was founded in 1620 by William Bradford. Both these colonies made their money by mixed farming and fishing. The reason for the establishment of Massachusetts was for religious freedom for Puritans. The reason for Plymouth Rock was for religious freedom for Pilgrims (separatists). Both colonies were governed by a Royal government. In Massachusetts, town meetings was a way to be associated with the government but to be involved, you had to be a white, male landowner. When Massachusetts was first established, it started off with around 500 colonists. When Plymouth Rock was first established, it started off with around 300 colonists. The Indian tribes that inhabited in Massachusetts were the Mahican, Mohegan and Wampanoag. The established religion in Massachusetts and Plymouth Rock was Puritan.
New Hampshire
New Hampshire was founded in 1623 by John Mason. The reason for the establishment of New Hampshire was to escape for those constricted by religious and economic rules.New Hampshire made its money by mixed farming, especially wheat. This colony first had a corporate government, but then it changed to Royal. When this colony was first established, it started off with around 500 colonists. The Native tribes that inhabited here were the Abenaki and Pennacook. Relations between the colonists and the Natives were not too violent. The established religion was Puritan. They did not tolerate any other form of religion.
Rhode Island
Rhode Island was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams. The reason for the establishment of this colony was for religious freedom. This colony made its money by mixed farming. This colony was governed as a Corporate government. When the colony was first established, it started off with around 300 colonists. Native tribes that inhabited in Rhode Island were the Narragansett, Wampanoag, and Niantic. Williams always held a good relationship with the Narragansett Indians. Even though Williams was friendly, the Pequot Indians threatened to invade Rhode Island. Williams insisted to keep peace. Then the the Pequot tribe retreated and saved Providence from destruction. There was no established religion in Rhode Island.
Connecticut
Connecticut was founded in 1635 by Thomas Hooker. Connecticut made its money by mixed farming. The colony was set up as a Corporate government. When this colony was first established, it started off with around 1,500 colonists. The Native tribes that inhabited the area were the Quiripi, Mohegan, Pequot, Munsee, Mahican and Nipmuc. The Pequot tribe were a very powerful tribe in the Connecticut river valley. There were conflicts with the colonists and the Pequot Indians, it was called the Pequot War. It started in 1636 and ended in 1637. The colonists allied with the Nanagansett Indians and attacked the Pequot village on Mystic River. The established religion in Connecticut was Puritan.
