WMHS Student Weekly Information
February 13 - February 17
From the Principal's Desk
Last full week of school this week before the Mid Winter Break next week. Let's go out on break on a strong note with our attendance, academics, and attitude! You got this! We got you!
BSU Spirit Week this week! Please see the the information below for the day by day breakdown for each event!
Reminder: we are working hard on our safety, order, and discipline at WMHS. The better our climate and culture, the better our performance will be.... after announcing over the PA system that we would start running 'hall sweeps', we started running them this past week. We will continue to run them at random times.
There really is no reason for a student to be late to class as we have a 2 minute warning bell and then a tardy bell. The expectation is that all students will be in their classroom on time once the tardy bell goes off. Make good choices. Get to class on time and stay in class. The magic is happening inside the classroom with your teacher and classmates. Nothing good is happening in the halls during class time....
WMHS Weekly Communication: after our break (Monday, Feb 20-Friday, Feb 24), I will send out my weekly communication on the evening of Sunday, Feb 26. We will be back in school full time on Monday, Feb 27. (I hope that you have an amazing break!)

Cool Classrooms
This English class is engaging in cross disciplinary learning. The students collected water from the Rouge River to see how the salt content changes during the winter season. After testing samples,, they will be writing to their local officials to share the effects of increased salinity to the waterways. This real world lesson does a fabulous job of making students stewards of the community.

The Upward Bound program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. It serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
STUDENT SENATE
RivalZ week was a huge success!! Thank you to everyone who participated in all events! We raised $2000 for the Family Resource Center.
A group of senators visited Salem High school this week to learn tips and tricks on marketing events.
2/13/23: Senator KLAA reps will be traveling to JGHS to prepare for the KLAA forum.
2/16/23: Senate meeting during 1st hour.
2/25-2/27: Senators will travel to Grand Rapids for the State Leadership Conference
National School Health Advisory Board
For too long, youth, and especially adolescents, have had very little say in the policies that affect their health on a day-to-day basis. By becoming members of the American School Health Association (ASHA) Youth Advisory Board (YAB), young adults have the opportunity to share their lived experience in a manner benefitting youth across the United States. By being a member of this inaugural force, students will have the opportunity to present at the ASHA national conference, publish a presentation, learn about state and federal advocacy, harness leadership skills, and share their voice on behalf of US Students. If you have any questions regarding the process, please contact Mr. Kobel in Room 117!
Students can fill out the following form to join the ASHA Youth Advisory Board: https://asha.memberclicks.net/youth-advisory-board
WAYNE PRIDE
WMHS senior Brandon Britton was recognized by the Westland City Council on February 6, 2023, through the Compassionate City Initiative. Brandon was honored for his volunteer service with the district's unified basketball team. Way to show your Wayne Pride Brandon!
The City of Westland intends to honor one Wayne Memorial student each month for their acts of kindness. Be kind to one another and next month this could be you!
Unified Basketball
Our goal is to show that no matter the needs, abilities or disabilities of our students, we can all come together as one Unified team.
We Need Help: We could use additional "student coaches" to get involved. These student coaches would assist the Special Olympians on the court, grabbing a rebound or two, passing the ball, helping to direct players regarding placement etc. The student coaches don't try to score, instead passing to open players. If you are interested, please contact the coaches for our program, Larry Lyman (lymanl@wwcsd.net) and Ra-Mon Watkins (watkinsr@wwcsd.net).
