WHPE November Update
Building Strong Connections: Educate. Engage. Advocate
Engaging our Students, Families and Communities in Health and Physical Education
Hello Wisconsin Health and Physical Education Professionals!
Fall is such a great time of year to engage in a variety of professional development opportunities to help us plan and implement some innovative activities with our students. Whether it is attending or listening to workshops, webinars, podcasts, or collaborating with educators on Twitter, Facebook, Voxer, or other social media tools, be sure to tap into all the resources that you can to stay on top of best practices in health and physical education. (If you teach in the Southeast District, consider joining us on Saturday, November 18th for a free PE workshop! See details below for more info!)
When sifting through all the "great activities" that educators share, be clear on what your mission and goals are as an educator, so that you understand the WHAT, the HOW, and the WHY of what you are teaching, and what your intended outcomes are with each activity. Take a moment to reflect on how the activities you use address the health and physical education standards and how effective they are at engaging students, families, and your community.
- What standards do each activity address?
- What learning targets and skill based outcomes do the activities reach?
- Is this activity engaging my students in 21st century problem solving, communication and collaboration skills, as well as personalized learning, that helps them to become the lifelong learners we want them to be?
- How can I make learning meaningful and relevant, so that my students stay engaged and feel challenged enough to want to learn more?
- How do I communicate with families and help foster awareness about health and physical activities outside of school?
- What activities could I do this year to share with families what students are working on in health and physical education? (Family Fitness/Wellness Nights, Bring Your Parent to Health/PE week, JRFH/HFH or FUTP60 events, etc)
- How can you develop community partnerships with local businesses and wellness professionals to strengthen the messages you share with your students in class?
It was great to see so many of you at the WHPE Convention in October and to have a chance to experience some tremendous professional development and networking opportunities. Thank you to all of you who presented sessions, shared your poster presentations, promoted JRFH/HFH at the AHA booth, and helped out with the convention in any way. If you have not already done so, please take a moment to complete the WHPE Convention Survey to help us plan for next year's convention! If you would like to be entered for a free 2018 WHPE Convention registration, please enter your name and email at the end.

SPARK PE Blog Post- How to Encourage Parent Involvement in PE
After a long week of school, you’d think kids would look forward to a weekend of energetic activity and adventures, but that’s not necessarily the case. In fact, research suggests that children’s physical activity levels are lower on the weekends than on weekdays.
The good news is, there seems to be a way to get kids moving on the weekends: get their parents in on it.
That same research showed that kids whose parents cared about and encouraged physical activity were more likely to be active outside of school hours. As an educator, it’s obvious that you can make a difference in the physical education kids receive at school (and how active they are) — but there are ways you can get parents more involved in kids’ health and fitness at home, too.

Developing Community Partnerships that Support the WSCC Model - Sample Ideas
The Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model calls for greater collaboration across the community, school, and health sectors to meet the needs and support the full potential of each child.
The WSCC model provides a framework for the health and education sectors at the state and local levels to work toward stronger alignment, integration, and collaboration.

The ASCD Whole Child approach is an effort to transition from a focus on narrowly defined academic achievement to one that promotes the long-term development and success of all children.
