Letter from the Principal
We are thrilled to have over a hundred families registered for math night on October 3rd. This night is a collaboration between the PTO and the Lions Park staff. I am looking forward to watching the families who registered interact around math activities. There are many fun ways to make math learning enjoyable, and this night will expose your family to some new ideas.
Our teachers work hard to provide many varied reading opportunities during the course of the school day, but it is also important that all students are reading at home. If this time is a battle in your house, it may help you to know some of the ways teachers vary reading routines in school, so that you can try similar things at home. In school, students are read to by their teacher, they read with partners and they read independently. It might be fun for your family to pick a longer book that you can read to all of your children each night. If you leave off at an exciting part, they will be excited for the next evening. You could also let each child pick a book or part of a book to read aloud to other family members. This could be done while eating a snack or in a fun place. For example, you could make a fort with a blanket and read in the fort with a flashlight.
When your child reads independently, you can have him or her stop at set intervals and ask questions like "Who are the characters?", "Where is the story set?", or "What has happened so far in the story?". You can also ask your children questions about what they like and don't like about the books and then ask them to give you examples. For instance, if your child tells you they like the book because it is funny, you can ask him or her to describe the funniest part. You don't have to have read the book to do these things, but your child will appreciate your interest in what he or she is reading. Making reading a part of the daily routine in your house will benefit your child academically and may also create new family memories.
Please consider attending one of the upcoming community forums. The School Board is in the process of determining whether to seek an Education Fund Tax Rate increase (referendum) in 2018, and a Community Task Force is meeting to study the issue and make a recommendation. Please come learn about this process and the financial challenges that could affect the future of our schools. These forums will be held on the following dates:
Thurs., Oct.12, 7-8 p.m. -- Community Forum, Fairview multi-purpose room
Saturday, Oct. 14, 9-10 a.m. -- Community Forum, Fairview multi-purpose room
Wednesday, Oct. 18, 7-8 p.m. -- Community Forum, Fairview multi-purpose room
Dr. Aumiller will also speak for a few minutes at the November 6th PTO meeting.
Warmly,
Katie Kelly
