Permenter Longhorn Check-In
Week of March 6 - March 10, 2023
A Note from the Principal:
Spring break is just around the corner and will begin Monday, March 13th. However, this is indeed a critical week in learning and this will not be an "off" week. Our high expectations for our students remain in effect.
By now I hope everyone has had an opportunity to review communication from CHISD Superintendent Dr. Hudson about expectations and possible discipline consequences for student behavior that impedes teaching and learning. Information was first sent via email last Sunday on February 26th and there was follow-up communication via Dr. Hudson's weekly SMORE and the CHISD website. As a campus we immediately began sharing and having discussions with our scholars about the possible discipline consequences including out of school suspensions that could last up to 45 days.
The majority of our scholars are committed to coming to school for the right reasons and desire a healthy and safe school environment. For those with other intentions, we have a solution that may involve removing them from our campus for the well-being of the majority. As I have reiterated numerous times, our main focus as a school lies in 3 things: scholar safety, scholar achievement and scholar social and emotional well-being. If student activity does not align with one of those 3 things - we must find appropriate alternatives to meet their needs.
We have instituted the use of a tardy machine to track tardies and increase accountability for our scholars. We have far too many scholars who think getting to class on time is optional. Class time is limited and important. This is also why we are restricting students leaving class and missing instructional time for restroom visits. It is a campus wide issue. We have some students leaving class for other reasons besides going to the restroom and some are missing up to 15 minutes of a 45 minute class for activities that are not medical or personal in nature - but rather other reasons unbecoming of a student committed to learning.
Additionally, it is March. Everyone should know the CHISD Dress Code by now. However, we have some scholars who also think adhering to the CHISD Dress Code is optional. We will begin random dress code sweeps this week. Students found out of dress code during these dress code inspections will automatically serve the remainder of the day in ISS. There will not be an opportunity to call home to request a change of clothes. Again, it is March. The dress code has not changed and everyone should be familiar with it. I will add that there are daily dress code reminders with visuals that are part of advisory lessons and this has been the case since September of this year.
A few reminders and announcements:
- Our campus hosted a Black History Moth showcase this past Program Tuesday, February 28th. It was magnificent! I am very thankful to Coach Hale for planning and organizing the event. It was a joy to see our many talented students and staff. I was so proud and wish more people could see all of the many talented students and staff who are committed to shining brightly. In addition to great speeches, tributes and performances the event began with a look into our current academic data and opportunities for expanded partnership. We can not do it alone. If you were not able to make it, here is the presentation shared for your convenience.
- We had our first PBIS Kickback event this past Friday. The qualifications to attend were intentionally high as we have high expectations for our scholars' behaviors. It was a short time during 8th period that allowed scholars to enjoy peers in a fun and safe setting. It was our first one, but won't be our last. Qualifications to attend the next one are found in this newsletter. If you have questions about the PBIS Kickback, please contact Mr. Linthecum at sherwin.linthecum@chisd.net.
- Also, please be sure your scholars are bringing their Chromebooks daily as that is one reason some scholars didn't test: they did not have their district-issued Chromebook due to either it being lost, forgotten at home or a repair fee being owed.
- Scholars will not have to make up any of the days missed due to the inclement weather this month. There will be days staff have to make up, but not students.
- If you have an 8th grader interested in becoming a member of the CHHS Blazing Red Silks, please encourage them to complete this form. Tryouts are this week and we wish all of our 8th grade Permenter hopefuls the very best! There is a flyer within this newsletter with more information.
- All parents have been contacted on their scholars' reading and math final exam performance. If you have questions on intervention opportunities for your scholar, please contact your scholar's teachers.
- Teachers have made arrangements for extended day learning opportunities in the mornings and after school and many scholars are not attending despite the lack of academic growth needed. Please be sure your scholar is attending these sessions and partner with us to get them where they need to be academically.
- An email was sent to all parents and scholars on 1/03/2023 that provided the recording of the digital town hall meeting as well as new practices beginning the first day of the spring semester. Please let me know if you did not receive this important email with the recording of the meeting and I will resend it to you.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we continue to prepare our scholars for their very best.
Faithfully,
Dr. Lemons

Lunch Reminders for 2022-2023
There is no longer universal lunch for all. Scholars must now pay for lunches if they do not receive free or reduced price lunch. We encourage everyone to complete the lunch application listed below.
- Universal breakfast for all
- Lunch Application for all
- My Payments Plus for Lunch Payments
- Permenter lunch menu for the week of March 6th
- MyPayments Plus is now configured to accept payments for fees associated with ID badges. The system won't accept balances accrued before the setup, but it can accept payment on fees moving forward.
- Continue to be mindful that there is no on-campus supervision before 8:15 AM or after 4:45 PM. Please ensure your scholar is not on campus outside of those time frames in the best interest of their safety.
A Note from CHHS Athletics:
Dear Scholars and Parents:
We want to ensure all scholars have the opportunity to take part in all events across the district. To ensure scholars are admitted into all athletic events at Cedar Hill High School, all scholars must present a non-torn digital ticket and their current school ID at the student gate. Additionally, all elementary and middle school scholars must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian throughout the entirety of the game. These scholars will enter through the general admission gate. All scholars are welcome to attend and we hope they come to support all of our Longhorn scholar athletes!
