November Dates in History
November 4, 1922 - Howard Carter, British archaeologist, discovered King Tut's tomb in Luxor, Egypt. On this day in 2007, 85 years after the discovery, the 19 year old pharaoh's mummy was removed from its golden sarcophagus and was displayed in a climate-controlled box. It may not be Tut's tomb, but you can take a look inside another Luxor tomb, of a goldsmith and his wife, on National Geographic's website!
November 11, 1918 - On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month...all was quiet on the Western front of World War I. Armistice day is now celebrated as Veterans' Day in the US. Catch up on a three minute history of this holiday here.
November 15, 1887 - Artist Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Her beautiful desert landscapes and studies of flowers can be seen in museums around the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago.
November 22, 1963 - US President John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas. At 1 PM that day, he became the fourth US President to have been assassinated. James L. Swanson's "The President Has Been Shot!" : The Assassination of John F. Kennedy brings this period of history to middle readers.
November 26, 1789 - George Washington issued the first "Thanksgiving proclamation," calling on Americans to give thanks for a happy conclusion to the war for independence. Thanksgiving wasn't declared a national holiday until Abraham Lincoln's presidency, in 1863.
