News from this week
Dear Parents,
Sorry I didn't send out a newsletter last week. I was out on Friday and since it was short week this week, I decided to skip a week. It's time to sign up for Parent/Teacher Conferences! February 22 and 23 are Early Release days for conferences. I will be starting my conferences that week and will finish them up the following week. Please make sure to sign up ASAP so that you can get your preferred time.

We had a short, but busy week. We have started our units on Geometry and Government. Students should be reviewing terms from both units nightly. Students have a homework packet for Government that they worked on 2 nights this week. The other 2 pages will be homework for next week. These handouts can be a bit challenging. They are based on what we have covered in class. Students will need to read the assigned pages closely to be able to answer the questions correctly. For the unit on Geometry, I placed songs and videos on my e-class page. I also added review games for the Greek and Latin Roots for the rest of the year as well. Your child should practice the review from 3rd grade and units 1-3. We just started Unit 4. Weekly Daily grades can have questions on any roots covered so far. Unit assessments cover just the roots from that specific unit.
On Valentine's Day we do not have a party. However, if the kids want to bring Valentine's Day cards/ small treats they may. There is a class list in your child's Friday Folder. My only request is that if you send in cards be sure to send one in for everybody. I will provide a decorative bag for them to put their cards/small treats in.
Valentine's Grams are for sale through the 14th. Students can purchase a lollipop attached to a valentine for $1. The gram is then delivered to their friend's classroom by the end of the day.
On Wednesday February 14th, the 2nd and 5th grade classes are having their Friends and Family Lunch. Our lunch time is basically the same, but we will be eating in our classroom. So, if you plan to eat with your child you will need to come get them from the classroom.
Thanks you to everyone who has sent in household items/ non perishable foods for the Lilburn Co-op. Donations will be accepted through the 28th of February. Also, thanks to everyone who is supporting the American Heart Association. We will be collecting forms for the remainder of the month for this as well. We thank you for your generosity in both of these activities!
Don't forget that yyping and reading logs are due every Monday. The links to the typing websites are on my e-class page.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

News from the Media Center
Reading is My Super Power
This year’s school wide reading program is Reading is My Super Power. The program started on Friday, August 19th. Students will answer super hero related trivia questions in the Media Center each week to hone their research skills. At home each child is expected to read for at least 20 minutes each night and return their reading logs each Friday or Monday (depending on your child’s teacher’s schedule).
Students who turn in their reading logs every week will attend a reading celebration at the end of the school year. In order for a log to be counted for the week it needs to be submitted on time.
To assist with the reading logs please do the following:
1. PLEASE make sure your child’s FIRST and most importantly LAST name are on the log. We have to enter data for almost 1000 students. If even 10% don’t have their full name this omission adds an extra hour to our data entry.
2. PLEASE turn logs in when they are due. Your teacher will tell you the due date.
3. PLEASE add your child’s reading time in MINUTES. To understand why this is important read request #1.
You may also submit your child’s reading log electronically through the Gwin Oaks website. Fill in information with your child’s information (including your child’s teachers and grade from the drop down menu) and click submit. Email your child’s teacher to let him/her know log was submitted electronically to the Media Center. If you have any questions please email Mrs. Amolo at sharon_amolo@gwinnett.k12.ga.us
