Message From the Principal

Dear Wheeler Families,

This month, I am sharing a message from one of our talented support teachers at Wheeler, Ms. Amanda Brown:

“Mom, did you put my homework in my backpack?”

Tips to Help Keep Kids Organized!

You’ve heard it before (and if you haven’t you’re one of the lucky ones). Some kids just have trouble getting it together. They rely on mom, dad and siblings to do most things that in the end, they are capable of doing themselves. Here are a few simple tips to help students develop independent skills for organizing themselves.

  • Keep a Routine- Many children thrive on structure. When students with organizational needs are able to anticipate events of the day they are better able to plan what they need and when. Post a schedule on the refrigerator with times and events. Use a calendar to post events that are not part of the typical routine. Then, refer your child to the calendar.

  • Have a place for everyday items- Pick a spot for children to keep toys, clothing, and backpacks! Keeping a consistent spot for these items can help kids locate the items when they’re needed.

  • Pick a quiet spot for homework- It can be tough to complete homework when the environment is busy and noisy. Pick a spot in the house where your child can work quietly.

  • Consistently check planners from school- Tell your child how important it is to write down homework, notes from school, or big projects coming up. What your student writes in the planner can be used as their own checklist when completing assignments at home.

This is not easy parental work! Helping children establish routines to become independent can be challenging. Be patient and stick with it!

Please enjoy March's Wheeler Flash, thanks Ms. Brown for the tips, and enjoy April Break!

Sincerely,

Mr. B.
