**Hey Leaders, this one's required for you!
4-H Spotlight: Archery Club
On January 24 and 25th, 194 Youth from 31 counties in Nebraska gathered in Columbus, Nebraska to participated in the Nebraska State 4-H Indoor Archery Competition.
The Douglas-Sarpy Shooting Sports 4-H Club, soon to become the Arrows & Ammo 4-H Club, has been meeting since January. We are so proud of the eight youth that participated and represented Douglas-Sarpy in the categories of Bare Bow and Bow Hunter Free Style. The youth are divided into three age groups. They didn’t have many practices before participating, but they competed well and learned a lot by attending the competition.
The competition requires skill, endurance and patience. The competition requires each youth to step up to the shooting line 12 times and shoot 5 arrows each time for a total of 60 arrows. The competitors were divided into three sessions with each session lasting approximately 2-1/2 hours. Those that place well at the indoor and outdoor competitions, may advance to Nationals in Grand Island, NE.

BE AN AG INNOVATOR!
This year the topic is water! The “Valuable Water Challenge,” is an educational activity focusing on the importance of ecosystem services and how they produce many life-sustaining benefits. These services are
important to environmental and human health and well-being, yet they are limited and often taken for granted. The 2020 AIE challenge will specifically focus on the ecosystem services as related to clean water and its role
in securing a sustainable food supply. Youth will be challenged to better understand and contribute toward conservation practices to improve water quality.
Teens will be expected to attend training on Saturday, March 21st in Columbus and each county will need to develop a plan to reach at least 50 youth in grades 3-8th grade.

STATE Public Speaking Contest Update
Because of restructuring in Nebraska Extension, Nebraska 4-H is moving away from regional contests. This as a great opportunity to elevate the educational components associated with the Public Speaking contest!
The 2020 contest will be held in Lincoln, Nebraska and will be a part of the PASE/Life Challenge experience. Once counties have conducted their contests, the top 5 competitors in both Speech and PSA for all 3 age groups (Junior, Intermediate, and Senior) will be invited to compete at the state wide public speaking contest to be held on a third day of PASE/Life Challenge.
What this looks like:
PSA
- Junior Top 5 from County Competition
- Intermediate Top 5 from County Competition
- Senior Top 5 from County Competition
- Total of 15 potential PSA submissions to the competition from the county.
Speech
- Junior Top 5 from County Competition
- Intermediate Top 5 from County Competition
- Senior Top 5 from County Competition
- Total of 15 potential Speech submissions from the county competition.
Please note, in order to qualify, all participants must have earned a purple ribbon at the county competition. Also, as in years past, youth do not have to be present on the day of the competition to participate in the PSA competition. Ribbon placing and medalists will be announced on the day of the competition.
