The Sequiota Scoop
Monthly School Newsletter - March 2021
A Note from Mrs. Wagner
Happy March,
Due to those snow days, March rolled in even quicker than usual this year. I sure hope that means the start of Spring-like weather!
We are so excited for Spring Break this year because the district is using this time frame to begin our courtyard remodel. Thanks to the district, SPS Foundation, and our amazing PTA we are upgrading our courtyard into a fabulous outdoor classroom. The remodel will include shade covers, new tables, garden boxes, turf, etc. We hope to have the "Grand Opening" sometime in April for our students and teachers. Watch our social media accounts for updates!
For our 3rd-5th grade families - we are still MAP testing this Spring. The MAP testing window will fall April 19th-May 7th. Please plan to have your child in attendance these weeks. More information will come out in April about helping ensure students are prepared for the test (i.e. rested, good breakfast, etc.).
We have a lot of PTA updates to check out. Please scroll down to the bottom of this newsletter to see some of the highlights and click on the PTA newsletter for all the details.
Let's hope for many more sunny days and beautiful weather!
In Partnership,
-Mrs. Wagner
Oh the Places We'll Go #SPSreads Reading Challenge
Kindergarten and First-grade classrooms are competing against each other, Second and Third grade classrooms are competing against each other, and Fourth and Fifth grade classrooms are competing against each other. The class that accumulates the most miles with these grade bands will win a Glow party! We can't wait to announce our 3 winners.
Check your child's backpack or reach out to your child's teachers for our book tracking sheets to fill out and send back to school.
We're also looking for social media posts with the hashtag #Sequiotareads to catch students reading. Make sure to use the hashtag so your child can earn their caught reading bookmark!
Field Day Volunteer Opportunities
PTA will be sending out a sign-up list at a later date for this purpose, but we wanted to ensure all interested volunteers had completed the Volunteer Application as this is a requirement to volunteer.
Parent Volunteers must follow the updated SPS volunteer guidelines found here.
Volunteer Application - district funded and free for parents
Volunteers need to be masked.
Volunteers need to be screened upon arrival.
If you're interested in volunteering you must have an up-to-date volunteer application and completed background check on file with the district.
If you have any questions about the volunteer application process please reach out to the office at 523-5400 or email Sara (our secretary) at seatkinson@spsmail.org.
Conscious Discipline
Conscious Discipline teaches that Empathy is the power of acceptance and that "the moment is what it is".
We try to use the following phrases with students to express empathy:
- D - describe: Your face is going like this (mimic their expression)
- N - notice: You seem ________ (fill in with emotion you assume they are having)
- A - acknowledge: You wanted _______ (fill in what you thought they wanted), or you were hoping for ________ (fill in what you thought they wanted)
This process models empathy for the child, builds in connection (when they look to see what expression you're mimicking), and helps them acknowledge their emotion and what caused it.
See the short video below of Dr. Becky Bailey explaining Empathy herself.
